Best Practices and the "WHY" of Anchor Charts
Visible thinking. That's what anchor charts are about. On Tuesday, when DOSL came for learning walks, they zeroed in on anchor charts. I completely agree with the observation that the classrooms that utilize anchor charts are extremely effective. The reason is visualization and bringing thoughts from the abstract to the concrete amd continuously reminding students what the focus of a lesson is beyond a learning target and providing a visual reminder for them to refer to during their work times or discussion times. An anchor chart is to be created during the teaching and learning process. If you team, yes, the second class should have their own chart, too. During this discussion with Kathy and Kelly, I realized the inconsistency of anchor charts being utilized. Some folks think they are messy and all that and I realize we don't have a ton of wall space. However, they all don't have to stay up all the time. If you want to see some great classrooms utilizing anchor charts, just let me know and I will steer you in the right direction. In the meantime, please take the time to review the two articles below on why anchor charts are a best practice and if you do utilize them, share it on the Pineapple PD board and invite visitors. If you are not as 'in to' anchor charts, rethink why, and how you can tie in your whole group and small group instruction initiatives by creating a visible thinking tool for the kids.
The most exciting thing is when children use them and begin to make their own visuals to assist on their learning based on the model of the teacher. That's when you know the teaching and learning sequence has launched the student into the zone of owning their learning.
Let Beth know if you need chart paper or markers for Anchor Charts!
Half Day Collaborations-Nov. 13, 14, and 15
Also, when planning, think through the lens of your goal setting and personalized learning while utilizing the five Cs:
-Critical Thinking
-Collaboration
-Creativity
-Citizenship
-Communication
These are the skills that are preparing our students for their lives beyond JBD.
The GNMS teachers continue to be impressed by what they see here on their learning walks regarding transformational learning. If you haven't done any learning walks or peer observations and want to see some great stuff right here at home, let me know. Also check out the PINEAPPLE PD! More opportunities are popping up. Thanks for the hosts and thanks to those stepping out to visit best practices in action.
I am so proud of all of the hard work and great things going on for kids around here!
Beth

R.E.D. Day - November 9 - Remember Everyone Deployed
Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) joins the Department of Defense, the DoDEA and the military community in celebrating November as Military Family Appreciation Month. We know behind our brave service men and women are our military-children who are serving each day right alongside their loved ones. Through deployments, reintegration and frequent relocations, our military families are essential to protecting our nation’s freedom.
This year, everyone throughout VBCPS is invited to participate in R.E.D. Day - Remember Everyone Deployed- by wearing red Thursday, Nov. 9. By wearing red on Nov. 9, VBCPS will demonstrate their support for military families and their active duty loved ones and spread a message of recognition and appreciation for their service not just during Military Family Appreciation Month, but every day of the year.
