Principal's Note...
Six years ago, a handful of parents, staff, students, and myself had a crazy vision for teaching children where their food comes from. Those volunteers got together on a Saturday and built the first batch of vegetable garden beds in front of the school. I remember someone saying, "wouldn't it be so cool if the kids could have a little farm stand at harvest time so that the garden program could be financially self sufficient? Well, it took a few years, but that idea came to fruition this week! Thank you to Mrs. Morgese and the volunteers for all of their work!
Harvest Day at Memorial School
Last Tuesday, September 26th, Memorial School held its 2nd Annual Harvest Day! Students spent the day coming out to harvest the beds they planted last spring. They weighed their harvest and then packaged in a “Food Safe” manner for the school cafeteria. For the past couple of years teachers and parents have been collaborating on how best to build and utilize our outdoor gardens. With the help of Memorial School PTO, students, teachers and parents worked together to plant, cultivate, and water our gardens. Memorial families signed up and volunteered to water the gardens throughout the summer. We had much to harvest! Fifth grade harvested 86 pounds of beets and second grade harvested 30 pounds of carrots, just to name a few! We had a farm stand Thursday after school that raised $140.00 to support the garden and our Green Team. The wonderful cafeteria staff is preparing beets, carrots, and potatoes to be served to students with their lunches over the coming days. The school would like to thank the PTO, all parents that volunteered and The Spaulding Education Fund for the grant that began the development of the Outdoor Classroom and Garden space.
Have a great weekend!
Best,
John

Japan Package
Dear Families,
We are planning to send a package to our sister school Shimazu in Kyotanga, Japan. We thought it might be fun to give the students a chance to create, find, and submit their own ideas. They could choose to draw or make something or could donate a small item they think our Japanese friends may not have ever seen or know about. We would like to have all contributions by Friday, September 29, 2017.
We would love if many children as possible participate.
Thank you.
Mrs. Grella and Mrs. Flood
Memorial School Building Committee – Community Meeting
On October 4, 2017 (9AM and 7PM) the Memorial School Building Committee, our Owner’s Project Manager Dore & Whittier, and our Designer JCJ will be hosting two community meetings to discuss the Memorial School Building Feasibility Study. Two sessions are planned for that day and residents from both Manchester and Essex are invited to come learn more about the need for a renovated/rebuilt Memorial School; the Massachusetts School Building Authority and its processes; a timeline; and where you can learn about and follow the project as it progresses. Tours of the building will be available at both sessions.
