A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Happy Mother's Day! Many mothers in the Alvord Family have carried a heavier burden than usual during the pandemic. We salute you and express our gratitude on this special day for everything that you do.
We also salute teachers by recognizing the California Day of the Teacher on May 12. Let your children's teachers know just how much you appreciate them.
May 12 is also National School Nurse Day. Our nurses have been incredible keeping our students healthy and supporting the effort to bring students and staff safely back to school during the pandemic.
A Special Service Learning Project...
In last week's message I recognized the hundreds of students at Norte Vista HS who are involved in Service Learning Projects under the watchful and supportive eyes of teachers Amanda Bush, Daniel Reyes, and others. This past Friday, Ms. Bush and Mr. Reyes and their students constructed, painted, decorated and installed the Little Free Pantry to serve the community. Councilmember Steve Hemenway was on hand to help and get the word out through his social media outlets. Thank you! and great job students and teachers.
Orrenmaa Elementary School Entrepreneurship Club...
ONE i/e is a RIverside-based non-profit organization founded to foster entrepreneurial growth in the region. Students use the Startup Launch Assistance Map (SLAM), developed by Jon Warner, as the model to grow their start-ups. Mr. Radeka, Mr. Warner, Councilmember Jim Perry, AUSD Trustee Carolyn Wilson, and lots of parents and kids were present to support the students and check out the classic and stylish cars competing in the show too. It was a wonderful family event. See the three teams of students below:
Student-Athlete CIF Championship Tournament Update
We never thought we would see it this year, and unfortunately we haven't for all sports. But CIF Championship tournaments are underway. This past week, the Boys Soccer and the Girls Soccer playoff brackets were released. Congratulations to the Hillcrest girls team and the Norte Vista boys team for earning spots in the tournament. Good luck! The other championship tournament brackets will be released as follows with tournament games beginning shortly thereafter. See the brackets on the CIF web page here.

Class of 2021 Graduation Ceremony Ticket Update...
On the COVID front, the case rate has improved from 4.5 to 3.9 to 3.4 in the last few weeks. The positivity rate has also improved during that same period from 2.3% to 2.1% to 1.9%. We remain in the Orange Tier. That's good news as we continue planning a limited number of year-end events, primarily for seniors, including a formal and traditional graduation event. Below is the chart for graduation tickets, by Tier.
Introducing Arlanza Elementary School's New Principal...
At this past week's Board meeting, Ms. Confidence Johnson was unanimously appointed by the School Board as the new Principal for Arlanza Elementary, effective July 1, 2021. Welcome to the Alvord Unified School District family!
Recognizing Our School Community Through School Board Resolutions...
Also at this past week's Board meeting, the School Board unanimously adopted the following resolutions to support, declare their sentiment, and/or bring public attention to the following groups, issues, or events:
Resolution to declare May 3–7 Child Nutrition Employee Appreciation Week
Resolution to declare May 12 as The Day of the Teacher
Resolution to declare May 16–22 Classified School Employee Week
Resolution to declare May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month
Resolution to declare May is Mental Health Awareness Month
In Closing....
I reported last week that out of an abundance of caution, elementary school and middle school promotions and other traditional year-end events will be similar to last year's events, in the interests of everyone's safety. Our schools will each mark their students' promotional milestones in their own unique way in the safest celebration possible. Principals will be providing event details this week if they haven't already.
On behalf of the Board of Education, we believe all promotional milestones are significant in the development of our students and are extremely meaningful for their families too. It's simply an unfortunate set of circumstances this year. But we are confident that our schools will make the promotional events special. Thank you for understanding.
As always, thank you for educational partnership. Let's finish the year strong!
Stay positive. Stay safe. Be well.
Sincerely,
Allan Mucerino
