The Scoop with School Support
School Support
Mrs. Marshall and Ms. Green met with all classes in January, to review problem solving strategies with students. Adults and children encounter all sorts of problems throughout their days and learning how to solve them, is an important life skill. We categorize problems into two categories; big and small. “BIG problems” are problems that are scary or dangerous, and need adult help to solve. “Small problems” are problems that are NOT scary or dangerous, and the individual is strong enough and smart enough to solve on their own, often by using choices on Kelso’s Wheel (ignoring, talking it out, walking away, apologizing, compromising, etc…).
You can help reinforce this important life skill at home. First and foremost, take steps to stay calm when you are stressed and talk with your child about what strategies you use. Model responsible problem solving, keeping small problems small, and art of compromise. Notice and talk about the many times they do successfully solve problems/conflicts on their own. We often have a tendency to focus on our struggles. Please help your child to recognize and celebrate positive social interactions they have had.
What small problems have you encountered today that you worked to solve?
