LEOPARDS - Service and Appreciation!
Celebration!
We did it! With your support our classes created 50+ Welcome Kits stuffed with needed supplies for families affected by Hurricane Harvey. Thank you to our PTA volunteers that drove our school's donations to the Austin Disaster Relief Network drop-off site at the Celebration Center in Georgetown. I'm so proud of our community for pitching in to help, and for working along side our students to show the importance of being service-minded.
Appreciation
Thank you to our 5th grade student leaders, England Student Council, 2nd grade project representatives, and our energetic coaches for a fun School Spirit Assembly this morning. Student leaders taught a refresher course on our PAWS Agreements and LEOPARDS character traits. We wrapped up the assembly with a fun dance. Dancing with 1,100 students was a treat!
Service
During our School Spirit Assembly this morning, we learned that our second grade students will be leading the next service project - already underway! Second Grade Leopards are currently studying the effects severe weather such as hurricanes and floods can have on communities. As more and more Texans are displaced by the flooding and devastation, they have been asked to think about what they can do for others. Second grade classes have researched needs and learned that our district is collecting clothing items and toiletries.
If you would like to participate, you can support our classes by collecting the following items for RRISD:
- New packaged socks (for adults and children)
- New packaged underwear (for adults and children, boxers, briefs, women's bras)
- Lotions (Shea Moisture brand, Jergen's, Cocoa Butter)
- Shampoo, conditioner & hair products (Dove shampoo, leave-in conditioner, natural hair oils, hair gels)
- Combs & Brushes (Hair clippers, bristle brushes)
- Soaps & body washes
- Toothpaste
We are only collecting items from this list. Deliver your donations to your child's teacher by September 15th!
Campus and Calendar Reminders:
Traffic and Safety:
Buses: Some routes have changed or been canceled, so please check/confirm your child's bus route before Monday. Remember that you cannot choose your own route or stop. Routes and stops are determined by addresses and assigned by our district transportation department.
Car-Riders: The car-rider line is running smoothly and efficiently! We've added more staff to assist in that area, so please consider utilizing this convenient and safe option for arrival and dismissal. You don't have to park! You simply drive through the back driveway and staff or Safety Patrol will assist you. Ask your child's teacher or the front office for a Car Rider sign for your windshield.
Personal Pick-Up: We ask that you stay in your assigned area at the front of the school and wait patiently for your student. Please park your car only in legal parking areas and use designated cross walks to meet your child by the front entrance. Once you meet your child, please exit the area safely using the crosswalks. Parents have been noted taking their children across the parking lot by walking in between buses and right into moving traffic. Never walk in between the buses.
Walkers/Bike-Riders: Parents, be sure that you have practiced a safe route home with your child, and be certain that they are pedestrian safety-wise before choosing this option. Traffic around our zone can become congested and we still have construction all around our area.
Safety Concerns: Law enforcement officers, members of the community, other parents, and staff have all voiced concerns about the large number of parents who are parking on Pearson Ranch Road, and then walking across four lanes of heavy traffic to get to school. This is putting children in harm's way. Please do not cross Pearson Ranch Rd. at any point other than the designated crosswalk areas at Avery Ranch, Ivean's Way, or Neenah. It is unsafe and you do not have the right-of-way. Let's model safe behavior for the children.
Educating, nurturing, and loving your children - that's what we do! We appreciate your partnership and trust.
I hope to see you all at the PTA meeting Monday night.
