What's happening in Room 111

Newsletter 1

School within a School (SWS) welcomes you to its first online newsletter. We will be using this space to get the word out about the great things going on in SWS classes and within the SWS community.

SWS's Thirty Fourth Annual Mock Trial Tournament

On December 4, 2014, SWS hosted its annual Mock trial competition. In addition to an SWS team and two teams from Wheatley's Mock Trial club, even neighboring districts also sent teams to compete.

This tradition allows over one hundred students to experience the thrill of being a lawyer or a witness under the stress of competition.

Dr. Feeney Teaches a Class

This quarter, Dr. Feeney decided to teach a class based on the book, Innumeracy. The students have been enjoying an interesting book and getting to know their principal in a different light. SWS always welcomes teachers, administrators and other community members to teach in the program.

New York City: Urban Studies

Urban Studies has been a staple SWS offering for the past fifteen years. The class focuses on various aspects of New York City's vast history.

This year, we focused on the renaissance that has hit Brooklyn over the past couple of decades. Our focus has been the role of transportation in creating Brooklyn. We studied how the Atlantic Terminal has provided a hub for the new Barclays Arena and the residential project that it is part of.

For our trip, we visited the area around Barclays, Brooklyn Borough Hall and the New York City Transit Museum. Students were able to experience the transformations that they had been examining in class.

SWS Farming Initiative

Over the past several years, SWS has partnered with the Technology Department, the Regional Studies Program, the Life Skills Program and members of the science department to create an organic garden at Wheatley.

This year, for the Day of Service and Learning, we added to our physical plant, building two hoop houses where we were able to grow a late crop of lettuce. We also built two compost bins that will help us to improve the quality of our soil and therefore our produce.

In the Spring, we will once again produce food for our Senior Send Off.

New AP Options for SWS

SWS offers AP literature credits to those who want to go the extra mile, and challenge themselves. Through a variety of AP optional literature classes, students are able to prepare themselves to take the AP literature test to achieve college credit. Over the past year, we have been able to enhance the AP system to now offer AP Language as well as AP Literature. This change will allow students to have the option to take two different AP classes/tests for college credit.
