High School Highlights
Weekly Updates from Big Walnut High School
October 9, 2020
This week brings several important events to BWHS. On Monday evening (October 12), our BWHS Academic Boosters (PTO) will meet at 6:30 in the high school Innovation Center. Please consider joining them. On Wednesday (October 14), we will host our second round of virtual Parent-Teacher Conferences. If you would like to schedule a conference, please contact our main office or you may also email the teacher directly. Finally, the first quarter ends on Wednesday. Grade cards will be available on PowerSchool on October 22.
A reminder that there is no school this Friday, October 16, as a conference compensation day.
As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers, school counselor or the administration if you have any questions or concerns. Feel free to contact the main office at 740-965-3766 between the hours of 7:00 and 3:15.
Are you picking up your student before the end of the school day?
Please remember, if your student needs to leave early, when possible, call the attendance line at least an hour before you hope to pick them up (740-965-7776). This will allow our office staff time to deliver an early dismissal pass to your son or daughter and prevent you from having to wait once you arrive. No student may leave early unless a parent/guardian has given permission. Even if your student is 18, they must have prior approval from a parent or guardian. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
Attention Military Connected Families:
Big Walnut Schools are committed to seeking out our military connected families and assisting those families as needed. Should an immediate family member currently be serving in the military, please let us know. Please complete the Military Connected Student Information Form.
We have several events each year to bring our military connected families together. Please check our district website and weekly newsletters for additional information on those events.
For students who ride a bus...
BWLSD Needs You!

If interested, please visit our Job Opportunities page to apply. Training will be provided to all substitutes - potential drivers will receive all training necessary to meet licensing requirements for drivers. If you have any questions, please contact Ron McClure at 740-965-8967.
A Note from the District Nurse
It is that time of the year again- Flu season is just around the corner. With COVID-19 pandemic this year, it is even more important to protect your child from viruses like influenza. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that all children age 6 months and older get their influenza vaccine by the end of October. Receiving the influenza vaccination before the flu is within the community is an important step in helping protect your child and community in fighting influenza. The AAP recommends either flu shots or flu mist as options for children for the 2020-2021 influenza season.
Children 9 years and older only need 1 dose, regardless of prior vaccination history.
Children 6 months through 8 years of age:
Need 2 doses if they received fewer than 2 doses of any type of influenza vaccine prior to July 1, 2020. The time between doses should be at least 4 weeks. Two doses should be administered to children who receive their first dose before their ninth birthday, even when they turn nine years of age during the same season.
Require only 1 dose if they have previously received 2 or more doses of any influenza vaccine prior to July 1, 2020. The 2 doses do not need to have been received during the same influenza season.
Influenza vaccination this year is particularly important to reduce the burden of respiratory illnesses and hospitalizations of children and youth and to prevent overwhelming the capacity of the US healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Please contact your health care provider or the Delaware General Health District (740-368-1700) to schedule your appointment to receive your child’s vaccinations. Thank you for helping keep the Big Walnut students and staff safe and healthy.

BWHS German Classes "Met a German"!
Students in Frau Craig's German 1, 10th period and in German 2, period 5/6 participated in Meet a German Day on Tuesday October 6th! October 6th is nationally designated as German American Day because so many Americans have German heritage. Meet a German Day is sponsored by Fulbright Germany in cooperation with the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) as part of the "Wunderbar Together 2020" US initiative. Meet-a-German offers American schools the opportunity to have a native speaker or someone with first-hand experience of German culture join their classroom....this year via Google Meet. It also provides speakers with the chance to contribute to international understanding and to connect with local communities. Big Walnut German students got to meet Alexandra Dolido this year and discuss topics like public transportation, grocery shopping and schools in Germany.
