WPISD Prepares for a Strong Start

WPISD has been working tirelessly on preparing for the upcoming school year. With guidance from the Texas Education Agency, CDC, and the State of Texas, we have made adjustments to our typical Back to School procedures. Below, you will find more information regarding this transition and our plans for the 2020-2021 academic year.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL- AUGUST 17, 2020

REGISTRATION 2020-2021

Registration will open in Parent Portal for all returning students on July 27, 2020.

2020-2021 Instructional Options

WPISD will offer two forms of instructional delivery this school year. All students will attend school via remote learning until September 8th. During this time students will be eligible to participate in UIL activities. Coaches, directors, and sponsors will provide additional information about student expectations.

The week of August 24th, families will be asked to determine whether their student(s) will attend face-to-face, at school, or remain in remote instruction. We value each of our students and families and appreciate the trust you have placed in our school system. We look forward to seeing you for the 2020-21 school year.

Full-time Traditional On Campus Instruction

Big picture

As students return to campus on September 8th, a number of enhanced health and safety protocols will be in place to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Highlights include:

  • Staff will be required to self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms prior to reporting to work each day.

  • Parents/guardians are expected to screen their students for COVID-19 symptoms each day prior to sending their student to school.

  • Teachers will monitor students and refer to the nurse if symptoms are present. Individuals who show symptoms at school will be isolated by the school nurse and sent home.

  • The use of face coverings will be determined by the level of disease activity of COVID-19 as required by order of the Governor. Based on the current Governor’s order face covering will be required for students in grades 5-12.

  • Students will be able to remove facial coverings during PE, Athletics, recess, and meals.

  • Class size will depend on the number of students who choose to participate in on-campus learning. Desks or tables will be socially distanced as much as instructionally possible.

  • Student movement will be staggered to limit the number of people in various areas during transitions. Traffic patterns will be established to separate individuals to the greatest extent possible, and signage will encourage social distancing.

  • Hand sanitizer will be readily available and thorough hand washing will be practiced. Staff will limit the use of shared supplies when possible and have access to disinfectant wipes to sanitize high-touch and working surfaces.

  • Students will participate in elective classes and recess as scheduled.

  • Students that plan to participate in extracurricular activities such as UIL contests must enroll in face to face instruction.

  • Students are encouraged to walk or be dropped off and picked up from school. If you choose to have your child ride the bus a face covering will be required.

  • School will be dismissed early each Wednesday to complete a mid-week deep clean of all district buildings

Full-time Remote Instruction Program

  • Students who choose Remote Instruction will be required to remain in Remote Instruction until the end of the grading period.

  • Students who choose remote instruction will not be able to participate in extracurricular practice or contest during their Remote Instruction enrollment.

  • The district will provide an appropriate electronic device.

  • A reliable internet connection will be required.

  • Students attend class on time - per their class schedule.

  • Students will follow WPISD dress code.
