West Briar MS School Updates: Week 10

Principal's Message

Special thanks to everyone who has shared their gratitude with me through wonderful student letters, treats, and surprises each day last week as I was honored through #ThankAnHISDPrincipal Month. West Briar's hallways were filled with excitement and fun during last week's two dress-up days for the Astros #OrangeoutWestBriar and Friday's Pink Out Day. This last week of October is National Red Ribbon Week: students can dress up according to each themed day to support the mission of staying Drug-Free!

Cycle 3 Progress Reports went out on Friday, but if your student did not receive theirs- they should check with their 6th period teacher. (However, since Progress Reports are a snapshot in time- to see the most accurate and up-to-date grades and assignments- check out the Power School app or HISD Connect Parent/Student Account.)

Let's make it a great Red-Ribbon week at West Briar!

Say Something- Anonymous Reporting System

Students were shown the Sandy Hook- Say Something training last week. If your student missed this training- they can go to this Know the Warning Signs Page- that explains how students can prevent gun violence and other harmful acts through tips and a video.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Sandy Hook- Say Something Anonymous Reporting System (SS-ARS) is a free program that teaches middle and high school youth (and the adults around them) how to recognize warning signs and signals, especially within social media, from individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others. This program emphasizes that students should Say Something to a trusted adult or use the Say Something anonymous reporting system.

The SS-ARS program logo & button below shows the three methods students can submit an anonymous report.

Say Something: Reporting Tips

Go to this webpage for anonymous reporting tips and how to use the SS-ARS.

Pink Out Day- Success!

West Briar students and staff donated a total of $792 to Breast Cancer Research that resulted in Friday's Pink Out Day! All proceeds will go to Pink Ribbon Inc- a non-profit network/international charity platform- accredited research focused on the origins of breast cancer pinkribbon.org .

Faculty Parking Lot

Please note that the Parking Lot located within our Car Rider Drop-Off/Pick-Up area is our Faculty Parking Lot. Once students are dropped off, we ask that parents continue out of the parking lot leaving adequate spaces for staff members to arrive. This also includes after-school so that staff members can exit the parking lot safely and efficiently.

Socioeconomic Information Form

Parents who have not completed the 2021-2022 Socioeconomic Information Form (pic below) will receive an individual email with instructions to do so. This blue form is very important so that schools can receive Title I* and State Compensatory Education Funding, which directly impacts West Briar MS. These funds can be used to hire personnel, provide tutoring services, order technology, and provide professional development for teachers.

The Socioeconomic Information Form can be completed on paper or through the HISD Connect Parent Portal.

*Find out more about Title I on West Briar's Title I Page
