Gearing Up for School Edition 2020
2020 School Year
As we begin our new journey into the 2020 school year I am filled with the optimism of new possibilities and a slight hesitation of the unknown. However, I know that as a community we are better together and we will tap into our collective intelligence to navigate this pandemic to the best of our ability.
I am, like you, a parent of a school age student, and feel the uncertainty of this coming school year, as someone who likes to plan and schedule, I am trying to be at ease with not knowing or knowing later than I would normally like and it has been a challenge.
Please know that we are trying to find the best scenarios and possibilities for all families and what that looks like for you and your family might be different than your neighbors, but I honor your decisions and know you will do the best for your family as we will do our best.
All the best,
Mrs. Marquand, Principal
3 Possibilities with the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District
In-School with Blended Learning
Tanana students will begin their day at 9:30 am and the day will end at 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Tanana will follow all safety guidelines and protocols, including all students and staff wearing masks, adhering to 6 feet of social distancing, and rigorous hand washing and sanitation practices. Students will be divided into 2 stable cohorts (A Group or B Group) with approximately 14-16 to lessen the number of students per classroom. Students be assigned to teams and will be enrolled in one elective. Regardless of the alert zone we are in at any given time, your child’s team will remain the same, however, if the school district goes into a red zone the in-person learning will change to remote learning, similar to last spring. Transportation will be provided and students meals will be provided.
Students will stay enrolled at Tanana and receive remote instruction from a district teacher. Depending on the number of students who opt into eLearning will determine the teacher. For example if we have a handful of students who choose eLearning the teacher will most likely be a teacher from the district. However, if 30 students in one grade level select eLearning it is very possible a Tanana teacher could instruct the class. eLearning class sizes could be up to 30 students. eLearning is different than homeschooling your child. The eLearning teacher provides online instruction and assignments for your child, both synchronous and synchronous using the district selected curriculum. You will help guide your child’s learning but will not be responsible for the curriculum nor the teaching. Regardless of the Zone we are in, your child remains in eLearning with their teacher and the zones will not impact the eLearning.
- Students have access to school clubs, activities, etc.
- Families will stay connected to their regular school, receiving newsletters and having access to student supports.
- Meals will be available for pickup at various locations.
If you're interested in eLearning for your student, please complete the eLearning Registration Form.
Homeschool through Fairbanks BEST
You will withdraw your child from your regular school and register them with the Fairbanks BEST School. The Fairbanks BEST specialist will help determine the curriculum you will use with your child, but the instruction and assessments will be determined and conducted by you. Regardless of what alert zone we are in, you will be your child’s teacher.
- Parents design and deliver curriculum and instruction.
- Students are enrolled in the Fairbanks BEST school, not their attendance area school.
- If you are interested in homeschool, contact Fairbanks BEST at 452-2000 x11209
