Where 4th graders learn and grow!
September 20th, 2019
The key to success is how you react when things don't go your way. That was our focus quote for the week. Students and I discussed what we do when things get tough. I also showed them part of a video about grit. I attached the link below.
Enclosed in the the Friday Folder today are the results of your child's M-STEP scores. See the letter and envelope with the data.
We had a jam packed week at school, and students brains should be full from learning so much!
We celebrated our nation's Constitution day on September 17th. Students now know how to recite the Preamble to the Constitution too.
Please read the newsletter updates and review the Friday Folder carefully this week. Lots of important information and reminders.
Have a great weekend!

Our big discussion this week was on grit. Feel free to use "get gritty" or "put some grit into it" at home

Reading Log due Monday!!!!
Remember that your child is required to do 100 minutes and will need to make up the time at school if he/she does not read at home.
Spelling News
Test on Tuesday!!!!
Hopefully your child has been practicing his/her prefixes by using the flashcards we made in class. Your child will need to know the meaning of each prefix. The test will be next Tuesday, September 24th. Like all things, students need to practice over and over and over until they learn these meanings. Please do not let your child wait until Monday night to study. Have your child click on the link below to practice this week's list on Quizlet.
Play the Prefix game!!!!!
Science Class
Students studied structures of plants this week and completed a Claim, Evidence, Reasoning activity on Friday. This is a great lesson because students are learning how to defend their thinking. This week they needed to defend which part of a blackberry bush was the most important to the survival, growth and reproduction the plant. Lots of great debate on this one.
Collaboration
Students work in a team to come up with evidence as to why the thorn is the MOST IMPORTANT part of the blackberry bush to its survival.
The seed group
This group believes the seed is the most important to the blackberry bush and its survival.
State a Claim
Students are learning how to take a position and defend it with evidence.
Claim Evidence Reasoning
Students are learning how to take a position and defend it with evidence.
Reading Workshop
In reading workshop, students are learned how to develop defensible characters this week by being a good read of people. They paid very close attention to what their characters were doing and thought about the why. Students also learned how to notice when authors repeat patterns with characters such as objects, thoughts or behaviors that they bring up again and again. Students wrote entries about their reading in their reading journals too.
Brianna writes about what the author keeps repeating in the story Amber Brown.
Mallory shares her thinking about what the author repeats.
Weston writes about a character's motivations and struggles.
Math
Students worked through lessons 1.6-1.9 this week. If your child was still struggling with rounding, I met with them for a bit to go over it and practice. The more they train their brains, the easier that skill will become. We also refreshed the memory on how to add and subtract this week. Lots of students need practice on trading in subtraction. We will continue practice of subtraction next week.
Snack
Please be sure you are providing your child a snack each day. A huge thank you to parents and friends who donated snacks to my classroom so that I always have something for a child who forgets. Some students utilize the available snacks every day. If you are willing to donate snacks to help replenish, that would be really helpful so that I can have a continuous supply. Thank you!
