NOTEWORTHY NEWS BY MRS. FOSTER
WEEK OF APRIL 27 - MAY 1, 2015
CAMP ACADEMICS
GREETINGS
We are in the home stretch – 6 weeks of school left. This week will be very busy. On Wednesday, I will be out at a school training, Thursday, we will be on our fieldtrip, and Friday is the Awards Assembly. With all of that going on, we will still be working in each subject area. This is the time of the year that I have to remind the students that we are still working and learning every day. They want to relax some in their studies. It is so important that we keep them motivated and excited about school.
READING/WRITING
We are going to revisit small moments in our writing. Small moments are something that happens in just a few minutes. When we write about small moments, we are concentrating on the details of the moment. We have done this throughout the year, so the students are familiar with it. We will also begin the end of the year testing in reading. The goal for first grade is to be reading at a level I by the end of the year. Most of our class has met and exceeded that goal!
MATH
We will be identifying and writing numbers to 130. We have worked with tens and ones, now we will be adding the hundreds place. We are really going to concentrate on subtraction facts. I want the students to go 2nd grade being able to recite the facts without hesitation. Please work on this at home. I have worksheets I can give you if you would like. Please let me know, and I will send them in your child’s folder.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We will be reading a rural map this week. The word rural will be a new vocabulary word. Next week, we will be looking a city map. It will be interesting to see what differences the students see in them. Make sure you ask your child, what the word rural means.
SCIENCE
We did not have any chicks hatch! We did get new eggs last week. We will start the process over. Hopefully, in 21 days, we will see a few chicks. We are beginning a study of food chains. On our field trip, we will learn quite a bit about food chains, shelter, and animal adaptations.
PEARLS OF WISDOM
Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.
