A Note from the Principal

Happy New Year Hill School Families!

We look forward to welcoming back our students tomorrow, Monday, January 4 and hope that you had a restful and healthy holiday break.

If you have not yet completed our District survey and are interested in switching your online student to Face-to-Face instruction or moving your Face-to-Face student to online instruction when the second semester begins February 1, please take a few minutes to do that now. The link is below. If you have more than one child, please complete a survey for each child you wish to change his/her status.

Please click on this link to begin survey: https://forms.gle/WCtBKRVHrKhwEDE46

Winter has arrived and our students enjoy getting outdoors, especially when it snows! All students are expected to go outside for recess, unless they have a written doctor's excuse. The fresh air, exercise, and social interaction are essential to our children's overall health and well-being. Please send students to school with winter gear, including snow pants, boots, hats, and gloves. If your family needs any support with any of these items please contact our counselor, Mrs. Ganabathi, or myself. I've included our contact information below.

I've included a January family check-in below. This only takes a few minutes and allows me to be able to gauge the needs of our families. We are all in this together and we want our families to know, that you are not alone. I appreciate the time you take to complete the check-in.

Thank you again for all of the support you have shown your child(ren) and our staff during these most challenging times. Wishing you all a year filled with hope, good health, and happiness.

Positivity in Action

Jaxson Lobban is a 4th grade student at Hill Elementary who has a heart of gold. Recently, Jaxson learned that a neighbor was diagnosed with cancer. He was not only empathetic about the diagnosis and what it meant for the family, but he went right into action. Jaxson set up a hot cocoa stand to raise money for the family, spending most of his weekends in December manning his station, working 2 - 3 hours each day. He raised around $1000.00. He and his family are putting together a basket to give to them. When our Hill School family heard about what Jaxson was doing, we wanted to support him and share the story of his good deeds. His mom, Jill, shared that they are, "so proud of the young man that he is and that he has such a great heart for helping others." It is another reminder of not only the power we have as individuals to make a difference, but also the influence we have as role models to our children. Thank you Jaxson, for your kind spirit, for following up with not just words, but actions, and for spreading joy and kindness to others. You are a true Hill Hero....we are so proud of you!

Positivity Project (P2)

As you know, Hill is a partner school, which means all of our families get free access to awesome resources that reinforce the character traits and teaching we are doing at school. There is a character card that explains the character trait, a grade-appropriate video to show the character trait in action and some questions that are great conversation starters at home.

This week students will begin learning about optimism.

Counselor Corner with Mrs. Ganabathi

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. In addition to all the academic work done at Thomson, lots of time is spent on SEL as well.

Over the course of the next few weeks, I will be sharing stories that address various areas of wellbeing for children. This week's story is Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon. This story is about a little girl that discovers that the most important thing she can do is to just be herself. Music Notes from Mrs. DuPrey

Welcome back everyone! It is so great to be back!! I hope you all had a restful break, and are ready to be back in the swing of things.

In music, all classes will be focused on small performance assessments to round out the semester. Assessments will include: keeping a steady beat, keeping an ostinato (repeated pattern) throughout a song, correctly using singing voices, and identifying different music theory aspects. Students will be receiving grades on their report card this marking period for music and technology.

Also, we have the pleasure of hosting a student teacher in our music room this semester. Miss Angela Wilson will be joining us from Maranatha Baptist University. I am really excited to work with Miss. Wilson. This will be my 5th time hosting a student teacher, and through every experience I feel like I learn just as much from them as I hope they learn from me.

Happy January!

Mrs. DuPrey :)

Fitness Fun with Mr. Whitman

Hello Hill Families!

Welcome back. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break. During the month of January we will start with our bowling unit. Bowling will wrap up towards the end of January, at which point we will have our basketball unit.

For the majority of January I will be out while my son, Theisen, has his next heart surgery. Jordan Arnold will be guest teacher. He is a 2015 graduate of Davison, and just finished his PE student teaching at Goodrich. Please remind your students to be on their best behavior for our guest.

The PE schedule for January is as follows… Students are required to have gym shoes for the entire week when they have PE. Boots are not allowed for safety reasons. Students also are not supposed to wear their snow boats in the regular classroom to help prevent wet and slippery floors. Thank you for your cooperation keeping our school a safe learning environment.

Students will have PE during the following weeks:

January 4-8: Craig, Strine, Buzzell, Halverson, White

January 11-15: Robertson, Fulcher, Schaepkens, Richards, Turkovics

January 19-22: Craig, Strine, Buzzell, Halverson, White

January 25-29: Robertson, Fulcher, Schaepkens, Richards, Turkovics

Go Cards!

Mr. Whitman

Library Corner

Our December, though it was short, was a fun one in the Hill Library. Although we only had one week together before we went on break, we used that one week to celebrate Christmas.

In the celebration of Christmas we read the Caldecott Award winning Polar Express! We had a fun time traveling to the North Pole, meeting Santa, and receiving one silver bell off of Santa’s sleigh. The book was thoroughly enjoyed by all! We finished up our Christmas celebration by doing some coloring, wishing each other Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and saying our goodbye’s until we see each other once again in 2021!

As we look forward to January we are going to be working on library manners, learning about winter, and celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. 's birthday.

Just as a quick reminder, if your child brought home a book over Christmas break, please have them bring it back to school on or before their library day. This way we can make sure that they will be able to check out some new books on their first trip to the library in the new year!

Hope you had a wonderful holiday season!
