October 2020
Our Mission
A Message from our Head of School
Greetings NCVA Families,
It is hard to believe that we are almost to the end of the first 9 weeks. The start of this school year has been unlike any other, but I am so proud of the way our community has supported each other through all the unknowns. I am extremely thankful for the dedication and persistence of our staff, students, and families.
October is a very busy month at NCVA. Our Fall Spirit Week kicks off next week, October 5th – October 9th, and we hope that you participate in our daily activities.
Additionally, October is National Bullying Prevention Month. NCVA considers bullying to be a serious issue and we seek to promote a safe and secure learning environment in which all students can learn, grow, and develop. Throughout the month, we have activities planned that will support a Bully Free School Environment. Wednesday, October 21st is Pacer’s annual "Unity Day.“ Our hope is that you will join us and wear orange on that date to raise awareness and demonstrate your commitment to ending bullying in our communities and schools. Please feel free to post pictures to our NCVA Facebook page and use the hashtag #PowerofONE. By standing together, we can make a difference!
As always, we are here to support you and your family. Please do not hesitate to reach out if we can be of any assistance. Thank you for making NCVA a great place to work and learn.
In Partnership,
Lauren Acome

Welcome
Can you believe it is already Fall? The school year is moving along. I would like to thank the Learning Coaches for supporting your students and making sure they attend all their required class connects. Together we can make a difference.
IXL
NCVA has purchased IXL, a fantastic supplementary program for K-8 students. This program will work alongside teachers to fill in gaps and support student growth. All students will receive IXL in both Reading and Math. While teachers will be using it in class to support student learning, we also ask that you encourage students to log in at home 3 times a week for 20-30 minutes.
- October 9th: Virtual Outing/Teacher Work Day
- October 12th: No School- Columbus Day
- October 16th: End of Q1
- October 16th: Curriculum Night
Reminder
· Always look at your class plan AND announcements. We keep these updated!
· Required Class Connects have mandatory attendance.
· Keep that Tech Support number handy – If you have technical issues, call them! They’re available 24-7. Technical problems are not an excuse for not completing work. The number is 866.512.2273 – put it somewhere you can refer to it easily!
· Save ALL of your passwords and important information somewhere you can find it. You MUST know your NCVA email, your Student ID Number, your Go Formative username and password (for this year, returning students!). Keep them all in one place so that you're not locked out when you have important things to do!
Is your student reading daily?
K-5 students should be reading every night for at least 20 minutes. Did you know that daily reading can benefit your student in the following ways?:
1. Helps in language development
2. Promotes brain development
3. Aids in understanding of a world outside of our own
4. Strengthens family relationships
5. Provides endless possibilities
Middle School Updates
Fall is here, and we're falling into the groove of school! October is upon us and brings an end to Quarter 1 and a start to the Quarter 2!
Below are a few tips we recommend for a successful end of Quarter 1, some important dates for October, and a motivational quote to help you succeed in this month of school! Be sure to also check out the Bitmoji classroom of the month!
Important Upcoming Dates
*See your Class Connect schedule in the Online School*
- October 9th: Virtual Outing/Community Building Day - No live classes, but you do have OMS work to complete!
- October 12th: No School/Holiday - No live classes or required OMS work, but you have the option to use this day to catch up any missing work!
- October 16th: End of Quarter 1 - Progress Reports will include grades up to this date and be sent by the end of October via email to Learning Coaches.
- October 19th: First day of Quarter 2 & Teacher Workday - No live classes, but you do have OMS work to complete!
Tips for October:
- Catch up on Missing Work - Quarter 1 ends on October 16 (10/16/2020). It's important to complete any missing OMS work by this date so you can start the second quarter fresh and so your progress report for quarter 1 is most accurate! You can find what work is missing in two ways: check your grades and check the content area. When you check your grades, select the "Classes" tab on your OMS homepage. Then select the course you'd like to review your grades in, such as Math, and click the "grades" tab at the top when your course opens. Look through your grades for assignments that are missing, denoted by a grade of 0. You can then complete that missing work by going to the content tab of your class & locating that module assignment on the left side navigation panel. This video will help you to do this, too.
- Check your Grades Weekly -Whether it's the end of a quarter or the beginning of a new quarter, it's important to monitor your grades! Knowing how you are progressing in your course is crucial to your success. Instead of just looking at your overall percentage grade each week, go to the Course and check the Grades tab to see what your lowest grades are. In fact, it may even be possible that you still have a retake opportunity for that quiz after you look at your grade. Reflecting on your grades and how you can improve them or do better next time is part of a healthy growth mindset which will lead to your overall success. This video will help you do this, too.
- Communicate - Communication is key in all aspects of your life. Don't want broccoli for dinner-communicate with the adults you live with to share that you don't enjoy eating that vegetable. If you don't share it, how will they ever know? It's the same with your teachers. If you're not communicating your learning with your polling tools, chat, or on the mic, they're not sure what you know or need help with. Communicating during live classes is one of the most simple ways to show your learning and ask for help when needed! Of course, you also have the option to email or call your teacher after class, too! No matter how you choose to communicate, remember to ask for help when needed.

NCVA provides McKinney-Vento/Homeless support to qualifying students
You may be eligible for assistance through the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Below is the definition of what qualifies a family to be considered eligible for supports and services.
According to section 725(2) of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (42 U.S.C. 11434a(2)), the term “homeless children and youths”—
(A) means individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence; and
(B) includes—
(i) children and youths who are sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason; are living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative accommodations; are living in emergency or transitional shelters; or are abandoned in hospitals.
(ii) children and youths who have a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings;
(iii) children and youths who are living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings; and
(iv) migratory children who qualify as homeless for the purposes of this subtitle because the children are living in circumstances described in clauses (i) through (iii).
Children and youth are considered homeless if they fit both Part A and any one of the sub-parts of Part B of the definition above.
If you feel you may qualify or if you have any questions, please contact Paige Adams, Homeless Liaison & Family Resource Coordinator, at padams@ncvacademy.org or at 919-346-0121 ext. 2030.
