Transfer of Guardianship at age 18- what does a parent need to know?
Guidance is given for this question in the Parent's Guide to Special Education in North Carolina (linked above). This guidance includes:
What happens when my child turns 18? When your child turns 18, the legal control over his education transfers to him. At 18, a student has the right to make his own educational decisions and is given all the rights that parents have had in the IEP process. You may attend the IEP meetings and advocate for your child, so long as he consents. But the ultimate decisions are for the student to make. Some students with very significant disabilities may be unable to manage making their own educational decisions. In those cases, parents may wish to pursue legal guardianship of the child. This is a legal process handled by the Estates Division at the county courthouse. To become the guardian of a person 18 years of age or older, the person must be shown to be unable to make important decisions. If a parent believes a guardianship will be necessary, she should begin the court process before the child turns 18.
7 Things You Need to Know about College Disability Services
The IEP team will be considering how to help your student transition into post-secondary education and/or the work environment. Your child may need specially designed instruction provided at the middle school and high school levels to increase your child's independence as he/she transitions into adulthood. In order to increase the student's understanding of his/her disability and needed instruction and accommodations, it is imperative that students begin to attend their IEP team meetings at the middle school level (or earlier when possible).
2 New Schools Opening in Cabarrus County for the 2020-2021 School Year
Centralized Classroom settings are designed with rest room and changing facilities within the classroom. Kitchen and laundry facilities connected to the classrooms give students opportunities to learn household skills such as washing, drying and folding laundry, and food preparation. The specific type of classrooms (ex: Abilities and Possibilities, Impact, Structured Learning, Learning Connections) will be determined soon.

SIBSHOPS
Studies show that having a child with special needs can have a profound impact on the family has a whole. One relationship that is often overlooked is that of siblings. Having a brother or sister with special needs has its wonderful and sometimes not so wonderful moments.
Cabarrus Sibshops is a program just for boys and girls 3rd-8th grades who have a brother or sister with special needs. Sibshops give kids an opportunity to meet other siblings in a relaxed, recreational setting to discuss common joys and concerns. Sibshops helps siblings develop skills to handle situations such as taunting, teasing, and embarrassment and to learn advocacy skills. Kids get to participate in fun games, team building activities, share stories, and prepare food. Sibshops are FUN!
