Eagle Express
September 5-8, 2023
Welcome to the 2023-2024 School Year
Principal's Corner
Eagles,
Reflecting on the foundational principles that guide our interactions and shape our community, I am reminded of the wisdom encapsulated in the golden rule, articulated through three insightful perspectives: positive, negative, and empathic formulations.
The Positive/Directive Form: A Mirror of Our Desires
In our attempts to make meaningful connections and foster a nurturing environment, the positive formulation of the golden rule reflects our desire for mutual respect and kindness. It calls us to become embodiments of the treatment we wish to receive. We should continuously encourage our students to ask themselves: "How can I mirror the kindness and respect that I wish to see in my surroundings?" This self-reflective approach promotes goodwill and a deeper understanding and appreciation of each other.
The Negative/Prohibitive Form: A Compass of Mindfulness
The conscious decision to avoid actions that foster negativity goes hand in hand with positive actions. The negative formulation of the golden rule serves as our moral compass, guiding us away from pathways that lead to hurt and misunderstanding. It invites us to be more mindful of our actions and words, ensuring they do not stray into territories that we find distressing. As learning community members, we should encourage students to ask themselves: "Are my actions reflective of the respect and courtesy that I hope to receive?"
The Empathic/Responsive Form: A Lens of Self-reflection
The empathic formulation serves as a lens through which we examine the relationship between our wishes for others and ourselves. It nudges us to comprehend that a negative desire toward another reflects inner turmoil. In this light, I invite you to help our students reflect on their inner desires, fostering a heart that wishes well for others and cherishes inner peace and happiness.
As we enter this new academic season, let us help students embrace the golden rule as their guiding light. This reflective lens fosters a community rich with empathy, compassion, and mutual respect. Thank you for being mirrors for our students in this journey of growth and understanding.
Cheers,

Required Beginning of the Year MAP Growth Test
- Tuesday, September 5- MAP Growth Science 2nd-8th Grade
If your child does not attend these test sessions, upon return to school, they will be attending re-make session. We ask that you support your child by providing a good night's rest the weeks of testing & positive encouragement to ease anxieties over a test. This is an adaptive test that will inform us of your child's current performance level and goals for growth this year.
If you would like more information about the MAP test, please check out the family toolkit.
Clubs
Sponsors are beginning to gather resources to get the clubs going. We thank Woodlawn Academy PTO who has prioritized student clubs and is helping fund resources to make these clubs a reality!
As the club sponsors send out notices, our Smore will highlight these clubs to keep you informed of opportunities to get your child involved. Space is limited and so, returning permission slips promptly will be key.
