Logan Memorial Educational Campus

February 2021

Welcome to our "Casa de los Niños"

This school year we welcome our first Montessori educational approach classrooms. Montessori learning is rooted in child development and science. In addition, Montessori learning is based on self-directed activities, hands-on learning, social development, and collaboration. In Montessori classrooms, students make choices for their learning, while the highly trained guide (teacher) offers age appropriate activities to guide the process. Students work individually and in groups to discover and explore knowledge of the world and to develop their maximum potential.

Montessori classrooms are multi-aged students, therefore, our "Casa de los Niños" will be composed of students who are between the ages of 3 to 5. Our three year olds will be the first group to complete the three year loop, thus having the same guide for three years before transferring to their next "casa." The three year loop allows for students to strengthen their social relationships by being models to others. In addition, our guides will get the unique opportunity to authentically know the students' strengths and areas of growth.

Our partnership with The Montessori Institute of San Diego and the National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector, will open opportunities for our parents to be involved in the Montessori educational approach. We are planning on hosting parent workshops, and will be inviting you to participate.

"Do not tell them how to do it. Show them how to do it and do not say a word. If you tell them, they will watch your lips move. If you show them, they will want to do it themselves."

-Maria Montessori

English Language Proficiency Assessments in California (ELPAC)

The English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) is California's assessment system that is used to determine the English language proficiency of students whose primary language is not English. The ELPAC is aligned with our state's ELD standards and assesses four domains: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

At LMEC, the Summative ELPAC is given in the months of February and March

Casa de los Niños: Our Assistant Guides will be administering this assessment to our youngest students. They will be taking this assessment 1:1.

Grades 1-2: Our very experienced Test Examiner, Ms. Penny Simmons, will be assessing our students 1:1 during synchronous learning time.

Grades 3-8: For the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections, our students will be taking the assessment in their English Literature class from February 8-18. The Speaking Test will be 1:1 starting the week of February 22 during synchronous learning time.

If you have any questions about this exam or if you’re student is scheduled to participate, please contact Ms. Erica Herrera, eherrera@sandi.net.

LMEC Celebrates Black History Month

As we celebrate Black History Month, we recommend families learn about Thaddeus Stevens & Charles Sumner. The two gentlemen are abolitionists in history who exemplified Dr. Bettina Love's explanation on the difference between being an ally or a Co-conspirator in the fight for equality, justice and human rights for all.
