Stop the Summer Slide!

“Summer slide” is the tendency for students, especially those from low-income families, to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. Here are some ways you can help stop the "summer slide" and ensure your child starts the 23-24SY off with academic success.
  • Access to books is critical. The public library is an excellent free resource for families to have access to books of a wide range of interests and reading levels, as well as librarians to guide children and families in selecting great books.
  • Parents, caregivers, and other adults can help stem summer slide by reading themselves, as children that see adults in their lives reading often tend to read more themselves.
  • Reading 4 to 6 books over the summer has the potential to prevent a decline in reading achievement scores from the spring to the fall, so even small steps are very beneficial.
  • Children that feel that reading is fun tend to read more often, so summer programs that help make reading enjoyable and social are most successful. Contact the public library to see what programs are offered for your family this summer.

Important Dates for the 23-24SY

Principal- Michael Mathis

Greetings, Orrs Parents, Students, Community Partners and Friends:

Welcome to the 2022-23 school year of excellence at Orrs Elementary School. It is an honor and a pleasure to serve your students this year. I have served students as a high school and elementary teacher, instructional coach, curriculum coordinator, school improvement specialist, assistant principal and now as the proud principal of Orrs. This service is founded on a strong commitment of ensuring success for all students and this can only be accomplished when all of us work together. With that in mind, we must work daily to help our students exceed their goals.

To accomplish this, students should:

- attend school daily, on time, ready to learn and share with others.

- share daily learning experiences with parents and set new goals together.

Additionally, parents are asked to:

- communicate regularly with your child’s teacher to support the learning process.

- celebrate your child’s success as he/she masters skills and concepts.

Our investment in this work will help Orrs students exceed their goals.

Thank you for sharing in the cooperative work of “Engineering Excellence” for every student at Orrs.

We have had a wonderful school year. I have enjoyed working with you to help make this the best year possible for your child. Please remember to continue to read and practice math facts during the summer. This is a great chance to just keep practicing a few minutes each day. You will be surprised at how much it will help for the next school year.
