Monty Moments: Monteith Student Leaders
Tigers,
This week we were the first of all the schools to conduct our evacuation drill and I couldn't be more proud of our Tigers. The students were respectful, responsible and safe during the drill. They were listening to staff members and the district administration was so impressed with our students behavior and leadership.
Talking about Leadership we are very excited to bring back our Leader in Me/ PBIS student of the month program. This month our staff nominated students that are shining examples of our first LIM habit: Be Proactive. We are so proud of our first group of student leaders and we look forward to acknowledging new leaders each month!!

Learning in the Library Monteith Library Update September/October
We have been keeping busy in the Monteith Library during September and October. Here is a glimpse of some of the material we have been covering.
The library has been abuzz with excitement around our new technology thanks to the PTO. We now have a MakerBot 3D printer, Makerspace and Ozobot kit. We are still awaiting some materials to arrive, but hope to start using them soon.
After reviewing expectations for the library, we read The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds and talked about “making our mark” with our interests and talents and to help others find theirs. The students decorated butterflies to display their unique personalities that will help decorate a blank wall in the library.
We also reviewed the Five Finger Rule which guides students to choose books that are just right for them and their reading level and started book check out. Part of our discussion was about book care and Mrs. Muller and I had fun creating a video to remind students the do’s and don’ts of book care.
We ended September learning about the parts of a book (title page, cover, spine, etc.) for our younger students and played a game called Head of the Class- Library Lingo to review library terminology with the older students. All grade levels learned about, or reviewed the differences between fiction and nonfiction and spent some time in the hallway seeing what animal they are as tall as and finding out titles, that are both fiction and non fiction, about the animal they measured up to.
Last week was Digital Citizenship week so we talked about balancing our time with our devices and other activities, defined what a digital footprint is and talked about how to make sure our footprint is one that is kind, respectful, and safe for now and in the future.
We will end October with reading the new book by Aaron Reynolds titled Creepy Crayon in all classes and have various discussions and activities according to grade level as well as learn some Halloween themed sign language, make bookmarks, and enjoy this spooky season!
Speaking of spooky, I hope to introduce students to podcasts in the future and possibly help some of them create their own. If you are looking for a fun activity with your family on these dark, fall evenings, here is a link to some kid friendly spooky podcasts.
Lastly, we have been getting a lot of books returned that are wet, have food stains or otherwise damaged. Please remind your child to take extra care of the books they borrow from the library. Unfortunately, we will have to bill families for books that are severely damaged. Thanks for your help with this matter.

ART NEWS
How big is your hand? In this lesson, third grade students learned about the human body and proportions by creating an x-ray drawing of their hand. First, students traced their hand, then learned how to add bones inside their hand just like you would see in an x-ray. Students colored the skin in black and the bones white. As an added bonus, students worked on an additional bat wing.
