Mathews Weekly
February 6, 2018
From Grace
Speaking of strengthening our community, during our assembly last Friday, our fourth grade students challenged all of us to be kind and kicked off a kindness campaign at Mathews. Students who are caught in acts of kindness by teachers will be given a kindness bracelet, made by our fourth grade students. When the bracelet holder notices another student being kind, he/she will pass on the bracelet. In this way, we're hoping to spread a visual message of the importance of showing compassion, of accepting others, and working to make the school a better place. This comes during the same week that Mathews has been certified as a Kindness School because of our participation in the Great Kindness Campaign with our preK and Kinder classes. Watching our students actively work at being kind makes my heart smile. Please join us in acknowledging kindness!
In addition to spreading kindness, February is jam-packed with special events to continue to create rich educational experiences for our students. This week we'll host a Bright Star production on the Civil Rights movement for our upper grade students and a delightful author visit for our younger students. On Thursday, I'll host some visiting educators from Japan and I'm looking forward to sharing our school and learning from each other. This Friday's assembly will highlight the writing our upper grade students have done on where we are in realizing Dr. King's dream and what we can do to continue to support equity for all. I am moved each year by the thoughtful and powerful words of our students.
Here's to another week full of kindness, deep thinking, learning, and fun! Please check the calendar regularly for special events and opportunities to participate in the learning. Enjoy the rest of your day and we'll see everyone in the morning!

Code X Opportunity for 3rd-6th Grades
Coding4TX is excited to be bringing San Antonio’s largest youth coding event to Austin! Youth Code Jam ATX is designed for students and an accompanying parent or guardian to explore computer science activities in a self-directed, free-range style. Stations will be set up offering a variety of content at differing levels, from robotic cars to virtual realty to HTML and more!
At Youth Code Jam, students and their partnering adult collaborate on challenges that they select, doing so at their own pace, and on their own laptop. * Please note that for those families who do not have access to their own laptop, a small number will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis. This inaugural event is open to students in Grades 3 through 8.
Space is limited to the first 100 student-parent teams!

Easy Ways to Support our School
Did you know that you can support Mathews while you shop for groceries, supplies, and goods?
Mathews participates in the Box Tops for Education program which gives us $0.10 for each Box Top collected and turned in. Many of the items you already purchase have Box Tops on them; simply cut out the Box Tops and drop them off in the pink boxes on the window sills by the cafeteria. In November, we made almost $25.00. While that may not seem like a lot, it can add up quickly and we appreciate all the help. If you'd like to learn more about this program, this link has helpful information: https://www.boxtops4education.com/about
Arrival Update and Dismissal
Dismissal: We have more buses/vans picking up our kiddos this year. Please do not park in the front between 2:00 and 3:15 pm, even if waiting for dismissal. It is important that we leave the front lane open for buses and childcare vans. Thank you!!
