Week of April 15, 2019
- As readers, we worked with our reading partners and groups to practice our reading skills. We are working hard to meet the goals we noted as areas to improve: Fluency, Figurative Language, and Stop and Jot.
- We read and discussed, I like Myself by Karen Beaumont. Then we made a text-to-self connection by writing a poem about how 'I Like Myself!"
Writers' Workshop~
- During Writers' Workshop, we worked on our Opinion Letter to nominate our favorite book for an award. We focused on writing a second example as to why the book should win the award we designated. To support our opinion, we included examples from the book using exact words and/or specific pages.
Mathematicians~
- As mathematician, we learned about 3-D Shapes. We learned that 3-D shapes have faces. Also, when a shape such as the cone has one point where all the parts or sides meet, that is called the Apex.
- Also during Math, we learned how to divide a rectangle into an equal number of squares. To help us remember how to make the partitions equal, we learned that if we need 5 partitions, we would need to draw 4 equally spaced out lines within the rectangle. Once we do that, we will create 5 equal partitions. We also practiced drawing notches on the outside of the rectangle to be sure that each of the lines will be equally spaced apart from one another.
- We played Shape Capture, Subtraction Top-it, and Target to 200 to reinforce our math skills.
Science~
- As geologists, we learned about soil. We learned that soil has many components: humus, pebbles, gravel, and sand. We made homemade soil combining all theses materials, Then, we closely examined the homemade soil mixture.
- First, we learned about humus. Humus is an earth material made of decayed animal and plant parts. We were able to observe the humus to find many decayed plant parts as well as some hard-like bone animal matter.
- Once we examined the homemade soil mixture, we separated the different parts of the soil by using screens. Large screens helped separate the pebbles and gravel and the smallest screen allowed us to separate the sand from the soil.
- Finally, we added water to some of the soil mixture and noted our observations. Then, we shook the vial of water and soil mixture. We let the mixture stay overnight to see if we can make any new observations. Stay tuned for our results....
Social Studies~
- During Social Studies, we talked about our Flat Lizzy Project. We will take Flat Lizzy to a historical place in Haddonfield and learn more about that place's history.
Other Activities~
- Shane McGonigle was our Star Student of the week. We enjoyed learning more about Shane!
- We attended our School Community Meeting on Monday.
- Congratulations to Olivia Rhynhart~ our Well-Balanced Word of the Month Winner.
- Our class took a field trip to the Philadelphia Zoo! It goes without saying...A Good Time Was Had By ALL! Be sure to check out the photos below.
