Leader in Me: Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood
Understanding the Habit
It is better to listen first and speak second.
You have two ears and one mouth; you should be listening twice as much as you talk.
Listen sincerely to others.
Be an empathetic listener.
10% of our communication comes from words, 30% by sounds, and 60% by our body language.
Something to think about:
When we listen with the intent to understand others, rather than with the intent to reply, we begin true communication and relationship building. Seeking to understand takes kindness; seeking to be understood takes courage. Effectiveness lies in balancing the two.
Future skills that can be learned by using Habit 5:
Demonstrate attentive listening skills to build and maintain healthy relationships.
Cultivate good social and communication skills.
Show compassion toward others, share, and put others first.
Appreciate different relationships.
Learn to relate to people who are alike as well as different, and work effectively in group settings.
Baby Steps to using Habit #5:
• Try to go one whole hour without talking even once. Instead, just watch the people around you and listen to what they are saying. Good luck!
• Think of someone in your life who you think is a good listener. Your grandma? Your dad? Your best friend? What do they do that makes them a good listener?
• The next time one of your friends is sad, notice their eyes or the way they hold their body. Tell them you know they are sad and you want to help.
How to Practice and Things to Think about:
Mirror, Mirror~ To be a good listener, mirror back what someone says. Repeat back in your own words what the person is saying. Use statements like “You seem to be feeling…” and “So what you are saying is…
Emotion Charades~ Find a partner. Practice ‘listening with your eyes”.
Choose an emotion to try to express just with your face and body. You can not use words.
•Angry •Sad •Embarrassed •Tired •Happy •Thinking •Bored •Impatient •Scared •Worried •Relaxed •Frustrated •Surprised •Stressed •Confused •Flattered •Nervous •Annoyed •Interested
Listen With Your Eyes~ Sometimes you have to listen with your eyes as much as you listen with your ears. People say a lot with their body language and facial expressions.
Zip It~Have you ever had a time with your family or friends when you knew that you needed to “zip it” and just listen? Why is it important to do this sometimes? How does this help the person you are listening to?

Teaching your children to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues and throwing them away immediately, or to cover with their elbow when tissues are not available.
