Sherman ISD Participates in Generation Texas
An important area within the Student Support & Engagement department is to ensure we have programs, activities, and events that help promote college and career awareness for all grade levels. To support this endeavor, Sherman High School is participating in Generation TX for the month of November. Generation TX month focuses on getting students, especially those in middle school and high school, thinking about their future with a range of actions and next steps that they can take towards college and career readiness.
Many resources are available for students and parents as they plan their educational goals, and the good thing is that it is not too early to start preparing in elementary. Elementary students can start researching and exploring colleges and careers. Students in elementary can also begin to create a Brag Sheet that organizes accomplishments, community service, and awards. This Brag Sheet will become helpful as students enter high school and begin to apply for scholarships, fill out college applications, or prepare for job interviews.
Teachers and parents of middle school students, take time to read this checklist of ideas to start the college application process. Don’t forget, Sherman ISD uses the tool Naviance to explore careers and investigate colleges. If you need help logging into Naviance, please visit with your counselor for details.
Teachers and parents of high school students, there are many steps to consider during each phase of the high school career. Take some time and read information on how you can get on the path to college and career education. I am also providing a senior checklist to ensure students remain on target throughout the year.
The free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Texas application for state financial aid (TASFA) is open and students should be filling out applications now! More information on financial aid can be found at “College for All Texas." Join us on November 29 @ Sherman High School from 6 pm - 8 pm for a Financial Aid workshop. Come prepared to fill out the application. Please watch our Sherman ISD Facebook for more information.
Let's take the challenge! We invite students, parents, educators, businesses, and community leaders to become part of the GenTX movement at SHS.
Thank you,
Dr. Smalskas
