What a great week to be a STALLION!
Please remind your students to meet the campus expectations for academics and behavior. Our 9 weeks celebration is quickly approaching and we want all students to be able to participate. The expectations are as follows:
Grades:
- Student must be passing all eight classes for EACH progress report and report card within the nine weeks.
Behavior:
The school administration has not assigned the student to more than 1 after school detention.
Student has not been assigned to ISS (in-school suspension).
Student has not been suspended from school.
Student has not been assigned to DAEP (alternative education placement)

Educator of the Month Educator of the Month
- Our educator of the month is.....Ashley Lowe
- This is Ashley's 6th year in education and she teaches 8th grade Math here at NMS. She said that she was called to do something greater than herself and impact the lives of children that may not have as many opportunities offered to them. She loves to travel the world with her loved ones, listen to music (especially PRINCE), and go to CrossFit at 5 AM. Her favorite guilty pleasures are Oreos and Wendy's strawberry lemonade. She is also an Aggie! Gig' E, Ags!
Student of the Month
- Our student of the month is.... Emanuel Scott
- Emanuel is in our Rice Owls Pod. He says that she admires his mom and dad because they are good to him and buy him clothes and his favorite snacks (Jolly Ranchers). At school he admires Mr. Bradley and Mr. O'Keeffe because they are the best and they keep him out of trouble. His favorite class is Theater Arts because they do open scenes, and those are the best! A good book that he has read recently read was Black Panther, because it is so exciting. His favorite music is R&B music and he loves football and basketball.He said if a book were to be named about her life, it would be titled... "The E. Scott Story!
English Language Arts Department:
6th Grade
This week in ELA, the 6th grade students will be working on their narrative essay, as well as reviewing and taking their DCA #1 Test. The Test will be on Wednesday, 10/17/18.
7th Grade
This week in ELA, the 7th grade students will participate in review stations and activities to prepare for the first nine week assessment, DCA# 1, which will be taken on Thursday and Friday 10/18-10/19.
8th Grade
- This week in ELA, the 8th grade students will continue working on developing their literary theme park based on the novel Make Lemonade, review for the first nine week assessment, and take DCA #1 Test on Wednesday and Thursday, 10/17-10/18.
CCR
CCR 7th- The students will continue working on improving paragraphs using the CAFÉ SQUIDD strategy.
- CCR 8th- The students will complete a career research project.
Math Department:

U.S. History
Students will be finishing up the American Revolution and preparing for their DCA #1 over Units 1-4.
Texas History
Students will be learning about the Mexican Empresario System and then preparing for their DCA #1 over Units 1-4.
World Cultures
Students will be studying North America: U.S., Mexico, and Canada
STEM Corner
Here's what's happening in STEM:
7th Grade
STEM ELA: Students will review elements of poetry and figurative language.
STEM Science: Students will review cell organelles, levels of organization, and cell theory for District Assessment 1. Testing will be on October 17 and 18th.
STEM Lab: Students will explore "Responding Outputs" of the Microbit Coding Environment.
STEM Texas History: Students will discuss empresarios for Mexican Texas, while preparing for the upcoming District Assessment.
STEM Math: Students are working with equations and inequalities in real-world scenarios and reviewing for the District Assessment which will be Wednesday and Friday.
8th Grade
STEM ELA: Students will continue exploring elements of fiction and poetry through an in-class mini project using the novel "Make Lemonade".
STEM Science: Students will be preparing for their District Assessment this week.
STEM Lab: Students will be exploring repetition in "Apps" by learning how to create Loops in the App Inventor Coding Environment.
STEM American History: Students will be finishing their paper slide videos and making 13 colonies "Escape Rooms". They will also prepare for their District Assessment.
STEM Math: Students will be reviewing for their District Assessment.
STEM Algebra: Students will be finishing Unit 3 and reviewing for their District Assessment.
This Week in STEM we will have STEM-Tastic "Carnival". 7th and 8th grade STEM Students are able to attend and bring a Friend!
Electives
Another GREAT week in the Elective Department!
ART
The students in Art have completed their contour drawing of shoes. They will begin preparing for the Rodeo Art contest next week. We will have some of the student work posted in the hallway. Please come by and see their work.
AVID (Ms. Greene)
To close the achievement gap by preparing student for college, students should have the opportunity of visiting an actual college campus. The AVID 6th graders visited Rice University on Wednesday, October 10 and Thursday, October 11. The students learned that Rice offers eight schools of academic study and that nearly 5,000 students enrolled.
BAND
Fall Showcase is on October 24 at 6:30 PM for the Concert, Symphonic, and Honor Bands. It will take place in the NMS Cafeteria.
Cookie Dough will come in that day as well. Students can get it either at school or at the showcase.
CAP (Civil Air Patrol)
Students (cadets) are completing requirements for their first promotion. A very important part of our program is physical fitness. Please encourage your student to practice push-ups, sit-ups, stretching, and running.
ALL cadets are required to wear the complete uniform each Thursday. We have issued all students a pair of black leather oxford shoes. These shoes must be worn with the uniform. Cadets are not allowed to wear athletic shoes with their CAP uniform. If your child needs a different size, please do not hesitate to contact us. We have all sizes available for your child.
Cadets must wear a plain white V-neck t-shirt under their uniform shirt. Crew neck (round neck) shirts are not authorized. ALL cadets have been given a handout showing the proper undershirts and socks to wear with the CAP uniform. If you have questions, please contact your child's teacher at 281-436-2864.
CHOIR
Field trips
Nov. 1- 7/8 grade to the opera 8-4 Students must dress nice.
NO jeans, tennis shoes or T-shirts (boys must wear ties)
Nov. 7-6th grade to ren fest Students must wear choir shirts and comfortable shoes
Money is due 10/25 Students must pass report card and have no ISS/OSS
$15 for ren fest includes lunch
$20 for opera includes lunch
DANCE
Dance classes have begun their first routine of the year. They are doing a pom to an edited version of “Level Up”. The music is fast and challenging, but with practice, the dancers will pick it up. There are plans to have tryouts for this routine in the future so that Dance Department students have a chance to perform at the pep rally or an upcoming basketball game (TBA).
THE SILVER SPURS DANCE TEAM has been working very hard at learning two routines. One of the routines will be performed at the King Vs Null game at Crenshaw Stadium on October 30th. The dancers will have a special practice on October 25th at 2-4pm at the high school and will need to be transported there and back home. The pep rally date has not been announced yet, but the Silver Spurs will be ready with their pom routine to “Havana Remix”.
ROBOTICS (Mr. Peace)
Students are now learning how to use a sensor to "see" various colors. We will begin programming our robots to move along a line by using the Color Sensor.
Theater
For the next several weeks, the theater department is working on group scenes from the Halloween film Hocus Pocus. We will performing these scenes in class for a major grade in groups of four. Come by and see a scene if you would like! They run 2-3 minutes each!
