What's happening with RJ @ AFSE?
While most of you know who I am and what my role is at AFSE, I think it is important that I formally introduce myself and briefly describe my role as RJ Coordinator at our school.
- My name is Marlon Jansen and I have the pleasure of serving as AFSE's Restorative Justice Coordinator. Through this position I offer support with the following: 1) Community Building: Student-Student and Student-Staff, 2) Restoring Relationships.
- When a member of the AFSE community is harmed, I will utilize Restorative Practices so that as a community we can 1) Understand who was harmed, 2) Identify the needs of those affected by the harm, and 3) Collaboratively figure out how as a community we can address the needs and repair the harm.
- These restorative practices will be used in order to shift away from punitive models of discipline that focus on punishment and move us closer to our goals of community building, repairing harms, and healing.
- Community Building: In room 512 (Wednesdays 4:30 - 5:30) I will hold weekly community building circles, hold harm & conflict resolution circles, have specific student/staff meetings, and provide a space for students to talk and relax. This space open ALL and you are welcome to join us at your convenience to share in our practice.
- Peer Mediation: We are excited to announce that our Peer Mediation team has completed approximately 15 hours of conflict resolution training and we now fully operational and available to help resolve conflicts throughout our community. Conflicts that you think are mediation worthy can be reported to culture and community or directly to me at rjc@afsenyc.org.

Updates
Shout outs: Yannaris, Johanni, Erika, Lucas, Olivia, Isaiah, David H., Ibrahim K, Norelis, and Shyanne have completed their mediation training and are excited to help their peers with conflict resolution. Give them a high-five and congratulate them for all their hard work when you see them.
Next Steps: The NYC DOE is offering support to any faculty/staff that is interested in growing their social and emotional capacity. Workshops in community building, formal restorative conferencing and conflict resolution are offered throughout the school year. These opportunities are a great way to find alternative strategies to build connections with our students and to network with fellow educators who share our concerns and commitment to the students we serve. If this is something that might interest you, please speak to me in person or email me at rjc@afsenyc.org for additional information.
