# Room 215

## Reading: Author's Purpose and Figurative Language

We have moved on to learning about author's purpose. Authors have three main purposes when writing: to persuade, inform, or entertain. The students have analyzed a variety of texts and videos to determine the author's purpose.

The class is also studying figurative language. Authors use figurative language to paint a mental picture in a reader's mind. So far we have learned about similes, metaphors, personification, and alliteration.

## READ 15 is now READ 20

Please make sure your child is reading at least 20 minutes per night.

## Math: Estimation, Factors, and Multiples

The class has been doing a great job of rounding to find estimated answers, factoring large numbers, and finding multiples of numbers. We have even been finding the greatest common factor (GCF) and the least common multiple (LCM). Learning these skills now will help when we begin adding unlike fractions later this year.

To help learn factoring and and finding multiples, we were introduced to a fun game from India. Students had to play each other, and the class played the teacher.

## Math Facts

Please continue to have your child practice their math facts daily. Memorization of the math facts is VERY important! All of the practice is paying off!

## Spelling and Language Arts

Spelling tests are getting harder, and will require some extra study time. Overall, I am pleased with our spelling performance this year. The students are stepping up to the challenge.

## Conferences November 17th, 19th, and 20th

Please sign up for a conference. We are using an online system to sign up this year. Information has been sent home with your student.

## Fire Safety

The fire department came to Ripley Elementary with the "Smoke House" to teach us about fire hazards and what to do in the event of a fire. We were also able to escape the smoke house by climbing out of a window.

## Matra

We had the great opportunity to listen to the percussion group called Matra. They taught us about all the instruments they were playing, and we were able to help them keep a steady beat during one of their songs.
