Literacy Lowdown

As a mom, I remember reading some of the same books over & over to my boys. I Knew You Could!: A Book for All the Stops in Your Life by Craig Dorfman, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. , or A Very Wiggly Christmas by Bob Berry. Do any of these sound familiar? While these reading moments are still some of my favorite memories, there were nights I tried to coax my kids into choosing a different book, one I hadn’t read a million times before! But research shows that reading the same books over and over to our children has many benefits. Check out this short article “Why Reading the Same Book Repeatedly Is Good For Kids (Even If It Drives You Nuts)” by Devon Corneal here.

January 23, 2017 - Report Cards Available on Infinite Campus

This year we again will not be sending paper copies of the report cards home. You should have received an email about this recently. Log in to the parent portal in Infinite Campus and you can view your child's report card. You may also print a paper copy if you would like to have one for your records. This will be the same process we will follow at the end of the school year. If you would like us to send a paper copy home, please contact your child's teacher or your schools Administrative Assistant.

Winter Clothing

Parents, please mark your child's name in their winter clothing: jackets, sweaters, hats, mittens. Many of these items are left at school and go to lost and found because they cannot be identified.

Classroom Placement for 2017-2018

The process for determining classrooms for next year begins soon. This process is very time consuming and will not be completed until early August. Families will learn who their child's teacher is as part of fall registration.


Although we do not take requests for specific teachers or to place a child with a specific friend, we do take your input on the kind of classroom or the learning needs of your son or daughter. Please send an email or write a note to Ann Schroeder (CEELC and MPS Students) or Sue Murphy (Waubesa Intermediate Students) with placement information.


Creating class lists that support all learners is a difficult and complicated task. Please share all information by Feb. 24.

Weather Reminder

As a reminder, if the temperature reaches 0 degrees (combination of temperature and wind chill) or lower, students will have inside recess. Most days the students will have outside recess so please monitor what type of outerwear your child wears to school on these days so they are comfortable and dry out at recess.

From the Desk of Interim Principal Ann Schroeder...

Dear CEELC/MPS Families:


During the month of February, kindergarteners in many schools across the country look forward to the 100th Day of School, which, give or take a snow day, looks like it will be on Feb. 10. All year, students have been calendar counting the days, with objects, and then also counting in groups of ten. On the 100th Day, teachers celebrate the various mathematical concepts that can be taught using 100.


During the school year, our goal is to have four formal opportunities to hear how your child is doing in school. In the fall, parents attended Parent/Teacher Conferences as the first opportunity. In January, teachers prepared the first semester report cards for parents to view on Infinite Campus. Report cards show how your child is developing academically, behaviorally, and socially/emotionally. If you have any difficulty accessing your child's report card in Infinite Campus, please call the CEELC or MPS Office for assistance. The third opportunity to learn about your child's progress will be Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences. Lastly, the second semester report cards will be available in June. A strong home/school connection helps our students be successful; thanks for your partnership.


Just as a reminder, breakfast is served before school in the MPS Cafeteria for K, 1, and 2 students. Our daily serving average is 35 students. Breakfast favorites are the whole grain cinnamon cream cheese bagels and mini pancake and sausage wraps. Food Service is trying out a new item--Yogurt Smoothies with a cereal bar. All breakfasts include fruit, juice, and milk. The adults in the Cafeteria greet students, help them make food selections if needed, and chit chat with students as a positive way to start the day.

Upcoming 1st and 2nd Grade Music Programs

As you prepare to attend your child's upcoming music program(s) at MPS Gym please keep the following in mind:

*Building entryways are unlocked at 5:15pm.

*Gym doors are unlocked at 5:15pm.

*Children should go directly to either the Art or Music room when they enter the building.

*Seating in the gym is on a first come basis; please don't reserve blocks of seats.

*Other parts of the building, including classrooms, remain off-limits.

*Video taping is welcome.


These are informal performances, giving families a taste of what we do in music class. All classes will be standing on risers and singing throughout the program. Your child's teacher will let you know which color riser grouping your child's class will be standing on. Students may dress up for the program, but will want to wear something comfortable for movements. Please take your child's coat with you to your seat. From the Desk of Principal Sue Murphy...

Dear Waubesa Families -


It’s unbelievable to actually think we are already into the second semester of the school year! It is our goal to communicate with you formally at least four times during the year. You would have met for parent-teacher conferences at the end of the first quarter, on Infinite Campus report cards are available at this time, another set of conferences will take place just before spring break, and we will then have report cards available again after school is out in June. Hopefully you have had the opportunity to regularly check your son's or daughter's assignment notebook which should also help keep you informed about what is happening each day at school.


We believe the first semester has been very successful. We are working on students having a growth mindset. Sometimes we hear "I can't do it" before students even try. Our hope is that students always give up their best effort, knowing ability levels will be different. Additionally, we are working on always showing respect and being kind to each other. Your support in these efforts is much appreciated.


If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call or send an email. It is very important to me that we have open communication.

School Drop Off

Please remember that students are not to be dropped off or picked up in the Leanne Lane parking lot. This larger lot is for staff parking and bus drop-off. Parents should drop their son or daughter in the smaller lot off of Red Oak Trail.


If you would like to avoid the heavy traffic congestion consider dropping your child off a block or two away and having them walk the rest of the way. We also have playground supervision starting at 7:30am so students may be dropped off earlier.


We really appreciate the many parents who follow all of the traffic rules. Student safety is our main goal.

Waubesa Service Project

Thank you to the many families who contributed to our recent Food Drive at Waubesa. Just before winter break, our school donated 725 pounds of food and non-food donations to the McFarland Community Food Pantry. Each classroom is continuing to collect cash donations for the food pantry and have a collection jar in the classroom. Your support in promoting this service project is appreciated. Research shows that when students know they are helping others they tend to feel better about themselves and view themselves as contributing members of the community. Our school-wide theme of the Power of One, Power of Team, and Power of Community is closely connected to this goal.

* Special thanks to our first semester student teachers. Christine Punzel taught our third graders and Mika Passini taught out fifth graders. We appreciate all they have done for students. We welcome Andrew Garvey as a new student teacher in fifth grade. He will be working mostly with John Wells for the third quarter.
