Spring Food Drive: Beverly Bootstraps

We are extending our Pie the Principal Spring Food Drive to benefit Beverly Bootstraps. In May, the executive director of Beverly Bootstraps, Sue Gabriel, visited MERMS to kick off our Spring Food Drive. She showed who food donations benefit, and why they are in their current situation (some details and names were changed to protect recipients' identities). After the presentation, students returned to H Block groups to discuss further, and reflected upon what they might be able to donate, and then posted this on classroom doors.

Each grade is competing against one another: the grade which brings in the largest number of items will have students selected to throw a pie in Mr. Guditus' face this June.

The 8th grade is currently in the lead, by a significant margin. So...bring in those items to donate for Beverly Bootstraps! Some of the highest-need items for donations are:

  • Meals in a can (stew, chili, soup)
  • Tuna and canned meat
  • Peanut butter
  • Low-sugar cereals
  • 100% fruit juices in single serving boxes
  • Canned fruit packed in juice
  • Canned vegetables (low salt)
  • Rice
  • Pasta Sauce

Bicycle Helmet Check: June 2, 2015

On Tuesday June 2, the Manchester Bike and Pedestrian Committee will hold a Bicycle Helmet Check Day in the morning before school, starting at 7:15am. All students that bike to school or bring in their helmet will be entered in a raffle to win 30.00 iTunes car or a 50.00 Gift Certificate to Seaside Cycle (the winner’s choice). Students who live too far from school to bike may instead bring in their helmet to school that day to be checked and entered into the raffle. Members of the EPD and MPD will also be present on that day to provide their support.

If you are interested in presenting but were not able to do so, don't worry: we are always looking for parents/guardians, community members and neighbors to present to students in classrooms, to provide a real-life connection to content that is being studied. If you are interested in doing so, please reach out to Guidance Counselor Kevin O'Maley at for more information.

Washington Trip: A Success

Our 8th Grade Class Trip to Washington, DC was a success! Despite some bus problems, we recovered, and students had a wonderful trip, making new friendships, learning about our nation and our government, and learning to be more independent. One highlight of our trip was the Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. A video of our four students participating in this meaningful and moving ceremony is below:
