Wow ... what a week in sports! The Brickies danced around puddles as much as possible to get some contests in, but it was a challenge to say the least. I think it's pretty clear which Spotify playlist Mother Nature had on "repeat" this past week ...

Guns N Roses - November Rain

Lady Gaga - Rain On Me

Eurythmics - Here Comes The Rain Again

Luke Combs - When It Rains It Pours

Garbage - Only Happy When It Rains

Luke Bryan - Rain Is A Good Thing

Rihanna - Umbrella

Fortunately, the weather forecast for the next 5 days looks like No Rain (Blind Melon)!!

By the way, HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all the amazing moms out there ... it's time for BricksCenter!

On Monday, the Brickies hosted NCC leader Andrean, currently ranked #2 in all of Indiana. This one was a BATTLE!! Through 5 innings of play, the 59ers held a slim lead at 1-0 in a fantastic high school baseball game. Unfortunately, Andrean picked up 4 runs in the 6th and held off the Brickies over the final 2 innings for a hard earned 5-0 win. Junior Cam Gonzalez was PHENOMENAL on the mound for Hobart and the Brickie D-D-D-DEFENSE backed him up with seniors Ivan Balboa & Ty Vann making plays in the field.

Inclement weather forced a postponement of Tuesday's game vs. the '9ers to Wednesday and due to wet field conditions at Andrean, the game was played at Dowling Park - home of the Purdue Northwest Pride! As good as Monday's game was, this one was EVEN BETTER! 7 innings wasn't enough to settle the score, so the game went into EXTRA INNINGS ... TWO of them in fact!! Balboa and freshman Drew Burris were FANTASTIC on the bump, combining for 8 strikeouts and scattering 6 hits ... sophomore Jevan Andrews led the Hobart offense going 4-for-5 with 2 RBI and Vann matched him with 2 RBI of his own!! Ultimately, it was Andrean who ended up making 1 more play at the right time than our boys and hung on to win a 6-5 thriller. Even though the Bricks dropped both games to the 59ers, our boys SHINED ... in 13 of 16 innings played, it was literally a 1-run difference between Hobart and the #2-ranked team in the state! These kids can play and they are getting better & better every time out!!

Hobart was scheduled to play Portage on Friday afternoon, but once again the rain forced a cancellation.

On Saturday, our boys played host to Calumet Christian. Prior to the game, the family of Brickie graduate Sam Moore threw out the 1st pitch to mark the 1st Annual Sam Moore Memorial game. Former Hobart coach Bob Glover Jr. spoke about the impact Sam had ... and continues to have on Brickie baseball. The moment was somber yet celebratory as we remembered Sam and honored his legacy 10 years after his untimely death. As far as the game, Calumet Christian held an early 3-1 advantage, but the Bricks fought back and eventually gained control & went on to WIN 7-4!! Andrews went 3-for-4, Balboa 2-for-3, and freshman Connor Stafford picked up the W on the mound after 5 innings of work work work!!

The Brickies are currently 12-6 overall and 3-5 in NCC play. Kankakee Valley is the opponent on Monday & Tuesday this upcoming week to wrap up the conference schedule. With two weeks until the IHSAA Sectional - the Bricks look primed to make some noise!

The Lady Brickies welcomed Kankakee Valley to The Friendly City on Monday night for an NCC showdown. Back on April 22nd, the Lady Kougars prevailed by a 7-4 score. In Monday's rematch, OUR GIRLS SHINED!! Sophomore Morgan Ellenberger was simply MAGNIFICENT in the circle as she pitched a complete game SHUTOUT ... striking out 8 and surrendering just 2 hits as Hobart WON 7-0!! Classmate Keirys Click and freshman Emili Knestrict got the offense going early with HOMERUNS in the bottom half of the 1st inning! In total, our girls plated 5 1st inning runs and never looked back in earning their 6th consecutive VICTORY!! INCREDIBLE!!

On Tuesday, Hobart was scheduled to face Highland for the 2nd time this spring. Unfortunately, heavy rainfall and cold temps caused the contest to be postponed. The makeup date has been set for Tuesday, 5/17.

Thursday, different day ... same scenario. THANKS MOTHER NATURE!! The Lady Brickies were scheduled to square off with Andrean, but another downpour forced another postponement. This one is rescheduled for Thursday, 5/19.

On Saturday, our girls took a road trip to Bloomington ... not to share in the festivities of Indiana University's spring graduation, but rather to face the Bloomington South Lady Panthers in an afternoon doubleheader! South entered the day with a record of 12-3 and a top-20 ranking in Class 4A. The Lady Panthers proved why they're getting state-wide recognition in the polls as they shut down the Hobart offense and took both games by a combined 15-0 score. In the 1st game, South chipped away at the Lady Brickies ... scoring 3 in the 3rd, 4 in the 5th and 2 more in the 6th to win 9-0. In the 2nd, they plated all 6 runs in the 1st 3 innings and held off any hope of a Lady Brickie rally with some lockdown pitching & defense. Click has 2 doubles on the day and Knestrict added another in the doubleheader.

Hobart is now 9-10 overall and an even 3-3 in NCC play. This is another HUGE week for the Lady Brickies with conference games on Monday & Wednesday against the top two teams in the NCC followed by a trip to PNW to face Illiana Christian, who currently boasts a record of 14-0 and holds the #26 ranking in Indiana. GOOD LUCK LADIES!!

Boys Golf

Monday, Hobart played 9 holes against both Lowell and Merrillville at Minne Monesse Golf Course in Grant Park, IL ... home course of the Red Devils. Even though they were on a golf course, the Brickies were THROWING DARTS on their way to a SEASON-BEST team score of 201!! The Red Devils & Pirates could only hope to stay close as our boys SHINED in earning VICTORY over both schools by nearly 20 strokes!!

Matches scheduled against Wheeler (Tuesday) & Highland (Friday) were rained out ... apparently Mother Nature thought there should be some more water hazards on the course??

The NCC CHAMPIONSHIP is just 2 weeks away and the Brickies are gearing up! This upcoming week looks BEAUTIFUL for the Boone Grove Invite and a date with NCC leader Munster! Senior Ethan Cover and sophomores Parker Glass & Ben Eberle continue to lead the charge as Hobart looks to make a late push to challenge for course supremacy!! Hit 'em long & straight boys ... and try to avoid the snowmen!!

Girls Tennis

It's tough to play tennis when you're dodging raindrops and trying to return a serve! Still, the Lady Brickies were able to get 1 match in this past week and head back over the New Prairie on Saturday to finish what they started a week ago.

On Monday night, Hobart headed up to Whiting to play the Oilers in a non-conference match. Sophomore Melanie Paterson won at #2 singles and both doubles teams consisting of senior Aoife Combs & junior Grace Hansen at #1 and senior Piper Logan & junior Maddy Baltrushaitus at #2 earned hard-fought wins to help our girls earn a VERY HARD FOUGHT VICTORY by a 3-2 score!! Logan & Baltrushaitis dropped the 1st set and then came back to WIN the next two in convincing fashion to seal the deal!!

Matched schedule for Tuesday (Griffith) & Thursday (Andrean) were postponed due to heavy rain & poor playing conditions. Andrean, an NCC rival, has been rescheduled for Thursday, 5/12.

On Saturday, the New Prairie Invite resumed play after being postponed a week ago thanks to a pop-up storm that drenched the courts. On a B-E-A-UTIFUL day for some tennis, the Lady Brickies were FANTASTIC! Senior Emma Novak placed 2nd overall at #1 singles ... Paterson finished 6th ... junior Kayla Walker was 5th at #3 singles ... Logan teamed up with Combs for 5th at #1 doubles and Baltrushaitis paired with junior Olivia Aichner at #2 doubles and placed 4th!! WHAT A DAY for our girls!!

Hobart is now 5-5 overall and still 2-2 in NCC action! The regular season wraps up this week with matches on Monday, Wednesday & Thursday! LET'S GO BRICKS!!!

Track & Field

Hobart's boys & girls track teams were scheduled to host both Lowell and Kankakee Valley in NCC action on Tuesday ... and then again on Thursday, but the rain wreaked havoc with the field event areas and ultimately the meet was cancelled.

Next up for the Brickie tracksters is the NCC CHAMPIONSHIP, which will be hosted by Munster High School next Tuesday! Normally, the NCC Champion is decided by combining the regular season record in conference competition with the team's finish at the Championship meet. With every NCC school unable to complete a full conference schedule due to weather, the NCC Championship meet will now be for "all the marbles"!

IHSAA Sectional competition takes place Tuesday, 5/17, for the Lady Bricks and Thursday, 5/19, for the boys. GOOD LUCK BRICKIES!!

Unified Track & Field

The Brickie Unified Track & Field team was scheduled to travel to DeMotte this past Friday to compete at Kankakee Valley in their 2nd meet of the season. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had different plans and the meet was washed out.

Over the next 5 days, Hobart will host River Forest and travel to Griffith to wrap up the regular season while at the same time gearing up for the IHSAA Tournament Series, which begins on Saturday, 5/21, with the sectional. Valparaiso High School will serve as host for this year's sectional competition. LET'S GO BRICKS!!

Some of the best (... I SAY THE BEST) moments in athletics occur when our student athletes get an opportunity to continue their academic AND athletic careers at the next level! Over the last 6 days, TWO Brickies signed their letter of intent! Seniors Alex Pickett and Jake Simpson will BOTH be attending Trine University in Angola, IN to pursue a degree and play some football! Trine competes at the NCAA Division III level and is a member of the MIAA (Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association).

Pickett and Simpson were both STANDOUT performers on the gridiron over the past 3 years for the Brickies ... helping Hobart return to the IHSAA Class 4A STATE FINALS in 2020 for the 1st time in 24 years!! Each also made an impact on the wrestling mat as the Brickies won 4 NCC titles during their time here ... Pickett a semi-state qualifier in 2022 and Simpson a 2-time STATE FINALIST and 6th place STATE MEDALIST in 2022!!
