Primary & Secondary succession

Timeline & notes

Primary Succession time line

primary and secondary succession

Primary succession:

Begins in place without any soil

- sides of volcanoes

- landslides

- flooding

Starts with the arrival of living things such as lichens that do not need soil to survive.

called pioneer species.

Secondary succession:

- begins in a place that already has soil and was once the home of living organisms.

- occurs faster and has different pioneer species than primary succession

Example: after a forest fire

1primary succesion is different from secondary because because primary starts of with pioneer lichens on rock and secondary begins in a place that already has soil.

2 A garden is an example of a secondary succession because it begins again in the place that has soil.
