Primary & Secondary succession
Timeline & notes
Primary Succession time line
lichens & mosses
first organisms to to start the enviorment.when lichens die, they decompose, adding small amounts of organic matter to the rock to make soil.
grass & herbs
simple plants like mosses and ferns can grow in the new soil.
aspen & black spruce
the simple plants die, adding more organic material
the soil layers thickens, and grasses, wildflowers, and other plants begin to take over.
White spruce & balsam fir paper
full ecosystem & enviorment has been fully established.
Insects, small birds, and mammals have begun to move in. what was once bare rock now supports a variety of life.
primary and secondary succession
Primary succession:
Begins in place without any soil
- sides of volcanoes
- landslides
- flooding
Starts with the arrival of living things such as lichens that do not need soil to survive.
called pioneer species.
Secondary succession:
- begins in a place that already has soil and was once the home of living organisms.
- occurs faster and has different pioneer species than primary succession
Example: after a forest fire
facts:
1primary succesion is different from secondary because because primary starts of with pioneer lichens on rock and secondary begins in a place that already has soil.
2 A garden is an example of a secondary succession because it begins again in the place that has soil.
