Citizens Freedom
Citizens should be able to make their own choices.
Thesis statement
Citizens should be able to make their own choices because that way they have more freedom, they can use their talents, and citizens should decide whether they want to die or not.
Everyone should not be equal
Citizens have the right to use their talents and be free, they shouldn't be prevented from using their talents. Harrison Burgeron wants citizens to use their talents because he doesn't like how everyone is handicapped.
Tessie Hutchinson
Since the government rules the citizens and it is a tradition for someone to die every year, Mrs. Hutchinson was the one that had to die in the story
Freedom for all
Harrison Burgeron and Tessie both think that what they are going through is not fair. Harrison wants everyone to be able to use their talents and Tessie though the whole lottery thing was not fair, which is why they need freedom and why citizens should rule the community.
Summary
In Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut and The Lottery by Shirley Jackson the citizens should make their own choices because they have a right to pick their own choices and have freedom. In Harrison Bergeron everyone is equal and no one can use their talents and in The Lottery people should make their own decision whether they want to do the lottery or if they don’t want to because they have a possibility of dying.
Quote and Analysis
- “Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of a cleared space by now, and she held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her. ‘It isn't fair,’ she said. A stone hit her on the side of the head” (Jackson 7).
- This quote shows how Tessie thought it was unfair and she didn’t want to do the lottery but she died at the end and it is a tradition to murder someone so Tessie died. Citizens should run their community because if they did Tessie would have chosen to not die because she though it wasn’t fair.
- “The music began. It was normal at first-cheap, silly, false. But Harrison snatched two musicians from their chairs, waved them like batons as he sang the music as he wanted it played. He slammed them back into their chairs” (Vonnegut 4).
- This quote proves how citizens should be able to use their freedom and they should use the talents that they have. It shows how Harrison wanted them to play what they can actually play and to use their talents. Harrison wants the citizens to use their talents because he doesn’t want everyone to be equal and he doesn’t want the government to control the citizens.
Conclusion
The idea of the community running itself would be better because they can have more freedom, use their talents and they don't have to be forced to die. If the community ran itself then they don't all have to be equal and each person can use their talents and no one would have to be handicapped and be ran by someone else. The points that are most important to me is that people should vote for who ever they think will do a better job of running the United States. People shouldn't vote for who they like better but for who they know will be a great leader. I'm most scared of all illegal immigrants going back to Mexico if Donald Trump does become president because some of my family members are illegal immigrants and I wouldn't want to loose them.
