GW Weekly Arrow Aiming for Success

Davis's Deliberations

This past week I attended the Iowa BEST Summit: Iowa Behavioral, Equitable, Social-Emotional, Trauma-Informed Health in schools Summit. The keynote speaker that kicked off the conference was Dr. Renee Bradley from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. She began by using the CDC's definition โ€œMental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.โ€ She went on to discuss the Department of Education's report "Supporting Child and Student Social, Emotional, Behavior, and Mental Health Needs". (You may follow this link to the document.)

We know before optimum learning can take place, we must create a Safe and Orderly School Environment that supports our students' most basic needs of survival which includes social needs of community, love, and belonging. As she was speaking, I thought about our school and the programs we have in place to support our students' SEBMH. We have PBIS, Restorative Practices, Check In/Check Out, individual counseling, small groups, and the list could go on. Then I recalled Todd Whitaker's advice from a few years ago..."It's never about programs, it is always about people." It is about our interactions with our students and one another. It is about how well we implement those programs to enhance our engagement and influence with others. It is more about our continual actions than our words or a checklist.

We have all heard it said that we may never know how far our influence reaches. Some call it the domino effect with the idea that energy is passed, not lost, from one domino to the other. This can also be the cumulative effect resulting from one event to create a series of like events. An act as simple as a smile, a hello, a kind word, high five, or compliment can be the beginning of something we may never realize. We are that domino to disrupt and influence the life of our students, our colleagues, or anyone whose path we may cross each day. Be intentional that we are giving our best energy to others.

Make it a great week,

Heather

PLCs This Week

PLC Question Focus: How will we know if our students are learning?

  • Discuss your last Common Formative Assessments with student data and analyze the data for each question. Tally up how many students answered each question correctly. Did 80% of our students show mastery of the standard? If not, how can we coordinate our efforts to ensure ALL students will master the standard?
  • Please add your notes to the PLC Chief Collaboration page

The Sunny Spot by the Sunshine Committee

Let your Light Shine: Remember to fill out a sunny note with the name of the staff member and your message. If you wish to put your name, you may or it can be anonymous. Tape or post the sunshine note to the cabinets in the lounge. At the end of the month, we will have a drawing for "You're So-Da Bomb!" winner for a soda and candy bar! Share the Joy and Appreciation and CELEBRATE each other!

Secret Santa sign-up is going on now until Friday in the staff lounge. Please see the email Lauren R sent out last Friday for details!

If you would like to donate to the Courtesy fund, please give your gift to our treasurer, Heather Campbell. Thank you in advance!

Staff Birthday Carry-Ins

Our sunshine committee came up with the idea to do something a bit different for our birthday carry-ins. There will be a monthly sign-up sheet in the lounge for groups and the members of the group will decide what they are bringing in for that month.

The groups are as follow:

  • 4th Grade Teachers + Misty C and Amy P
  • 5th Grade Teachers + Brooke D and Amy H
  • Associates + Leslie L
  • Specials & Student Service (Donna, Danielle, Brad, Nancy, Diane, Heathers, Lauren, Alex, Lisa, Ed)

This will make it easier for everyone to enjoy and not have to bring something in each month!

Note: The first carry in to sign up for is this Friday!
