Description
How can we form partnerships between professionals and teachers to bring real-world STEM to our classrooms? Join us as we tour local businesses and industries to learn about their work, explore opportunities to bring scientists and engineers to our school, and receive lessons that connect to our curriculum.
Meet at SERESC and visit two sites during the field trip day.
Objectives
Participants will:
- learn about school and business/industry partnerships
- explore opportunities to bring STEM professionals to your school or classroom
- receive resources that connect local STEM examples to classroom science
About the Presenter, Joyce Tugel
Joyce Tugel is a K-12 STEM Education Specialist at the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance (MMSA). Her work is primarily focused on teacher leadership, professional development in the areas of science curriculum, instruction and formative assessment, and implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards. Joyce is a co-author of two books in the NSTA Press Uncovering Student Ideas in Science series and editor of Notes from the Field – Teaching for Conceptual Change: Uncovering Student Thinking in Science Through Action Research. She partners with community-based learning initiatives to provide academic STEM support, and has served as the Project Director for multiple NOAA, Noyce, and Maine Math Science Partnership projects. Prior to coming to the MMSA in 2005, Joyce was a science professional development specialist at the TERC Eisenhower Regional Alliance for five years and taught high school chemistry and physical science for ten years. Prior to receiving her science teaching certification, Joyce was a researcher in environmental biogeochemistry at the University of New Hampshire.
Joyce serves on the National Science Education Leadership Association Board of Directors, and has served as the National Science Teachers Association District II Director and Professional Development Division Director. She is a Fellow of the National Academy for Science and Mathematics Education Leadership. During her teaching career, Joyce received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Secondary Science Teaching, the Milken Foundation National Distinguished Educator Award, and the New England Institute of Chemists Secondary Teaching Award. Joyce received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Microbiology from the University of New Hampshire.

Cost and Registration Information
Participants will receive a certificate of attendance.
Cost is $150.00 for this Field Trip. Please note that lunch is not included and is not available for purchase so please plan to bring your own.

**All received registrations are subject to Cancellation/Refund policy. A full refund will be made for cancellations sent via email 7 days before the event.
**Refunds will not be given if the request is received less than 7 days prior to the event.

**SERESC accepts substitution of another person. 24 hour advanced notice is appreciated.
