Mrs. Stasney's 3rd Grade News

For the week of April 1st

STAAR Testing This Week

Both 4th and 5th grade students will be taking STAAR tests on Tuesday & Wednesday this week. This testing is going to impact the entire campus. Listed below is how it will impact our class:

-Visitors are not allowed on campus at all these two days. Numerous students are taken from their classrooms for small-group testing, and quite often these small groups are testing in the front office area (such as Mrs. Goodman's office, Mrs. Bartosh's office, Mrs. Hopkins's office).

-There will be no specials on Tuesday & Wednesday. I will schedule a morning recess in addition to our afternoon recess so that the students have a chance to move!

-I will be administering the STAAR test on both days to a small group of 4th grade students. This means that a substitute will be with the students during this time. Testing is limited to no more than 4 hours, but the students generally finish before that. I will return to my class as soon as my testing students are finished, so I should be rejoining the kiddos by lunch.

Bootcamp!

These three weeks leading up to our STAAR tests (aka "the big ugly") are designated as review weeks. In Bryan ISD, these review weeks are called "Bootcamp"! The idea is to review everything (or as much as we can) that we've learned in both math and reading since August during these 3 weeks. Bootcamp will be somewhat fast-paced, and I strive to make it fun and engaging for the students by incorporating group work and games into the review.

On Thursday of this week, the students will take 2 "STAAR-Lite" assessments (math and reading). These are checkpoints created by the district and will each be about 25 questions. The students will have 2 hours to complete each test, which means we'll be testing for 4 hours on Thursday. I will be using the data from these assessments to determine which exact skills individuals students as well as the class as a whole needs more review on before "the big ugly" later in the month.
