Horizon Teacher Award Nomination
It is the time of year to honor and recognize exemplary first-year teachers who perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding. These teachers will finish their first year of teaching in May, 2022.
This fall the Kansas State Department of Education will allow the De Soto School District to nominate one Elementary and one Secondary teacher for the Horizon Award. The Horizon Award honors and recognizes exemplary teachers who will complete their first year this May. These spectacular teachers perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding. All of our 2021-2022 teachers who were new last August to the profession are eligible for this honor! Below you will find the guidelines for nominating a teacher:
Novice teachers who will have successfully completed their first year of teaching are eligible to be recognized. A teacher (Pre-K through grade 12) who successfully completes his/her first year of teaching by May 2022 is eligible. The Kansas Horizon Award Program is a regional competition. The regions correspond to the state’s four U.S. congressional districts.
The Kansas State Department of Education will appoint regional selection committees responsible for reviewing the nomination forms and selecting four elementary classroom teachers and four secondary classroom teachers per region for a total of 32 teachers.
v The criteria for this award are:
v Nominee will have successfully completed his or her first year of teaching in a pre-kindergarten through grade 12 Kansas school accredited by the State Board of Education.
v Nominee will be a full-time classroom teacher.
v Nominee will be responsible for the assessment of students, assignment of grades, preparation of lesson plans, parent-teacher conferences, discipline, attendance, and other daily educational tasks.
v Nominee will have performed in a way that distinguishes him or her from other novice teachers. Nominee is considered to be exceptionally skilled, dedicated and able to inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities.
In order to facilitate the process, we will begin the nominating portion of the program from February 1-March 1. Anyone can nominate an outstanding teacher who will complete their first year this year: administrators, teachers, and/or parents. (A first year teacher is considered a teacher new to the profession). If you would like to nominate a first year teacher go to www.usd232.org/horizonaward and follow the Horizon A
Upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place February 16th-17th, 2022. Currently, we are allowing parent choice of in-person or virtual (Zoom) meetings. District recommendations may change closer to conference dates and will be communicated in advance.
In an effort to keep everyone as healthy as possible, families are encouraged to participate in virtual conferences, via Zoom. When applicable, teachers will send needed documents home prior to conferences, for review and discussion during the conferences. If you prefer an in-person conference, please select or note such on the sign-up. In-person conferences require masks and social distancing. Additionally, should you feel ill within the five days immediately prior to the conference, please contact Lisa O'Donnell in the Riverview office to indicate your preference for a virtual meeting. Lisa may be reached at LODonnell@usd232.org
The conference sign up links have been sent out and will close on Wednesday, February 9th. If you have questions, please reach out. We look forward to discussing your child’s progress with you.

Kindest Kansas Citian
It’s time again for the annual KINDEST KANSAS CITIAN ESSAY CONTEST. It is a one-page drawing (K-2) or essay (3-5) demonstrating the positive impact the nominee has made on the student’s life, written by the student. Contest judges are looking to identify kind acts that come from the heart. ENTRIES ARE OPTIONAL. The contest rules are included in the essay packet attached.
Changes for this year include submitting the entries online. This will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian or the student (link below). The contest’s due date is Friday, February 18th. This is set by the contest, so I cannot extend the due date like in previous years. Required information for submission includes: student name, grade, age, home address; parent/guardian name and phone number; an email address that will be checked; nominee’s first and last name, relation to student, and email. Once the drawing or essay is complete and you have the required information, please submit it at: https://kindestkansascitian.org/public-essay-submission?teacher_id=606
