Family Book Club
During our first meeting of Family Book Club, we discussed our desirable outcomes and how our meetings will be conducted. Our goals are to instill a love for reading by developing strong reading habits and creating a dialogue that promotes comprehension and appreciation for books. We want our families to walk away with reading strategies that will enable discussions that highlight how characters grow and learn from the conflicts and obstacles they face. In the end, we hope our participants will develop a strong family connection to reading and to see the positive experiences this activity can provide a family.
We spent time relating our fondest memories of reading and setting goals that will allow us to complete the books provided. Families viewed book trailers about the first genre, graphic novels that encouraged discussion to make the best selection for their family.
At our second week of book club, our family participants split into three groups designated by the book they read. In the group discussions, readers summarized the important events, highlighted the character’s transformation, shared their favorite parts, and reflected on their reading experience as a family. After the book talk, families engaged in a comic strip making activity that provided them a keepsake. Again, book trailers were viewed to help make a family selection of the next book and genre which is mystery.
