Trauma Informed Professional Development:
Article: Please Stop Punishing Kids for Their Invisible Disabilities
- While trauma itself is not a disability, the brain is re-wired. To me, mental health is an invisible disability.
- I believe that we do the best we can until we know better. We've all made mistakes and missteps with our students. The goal is to know more and then do better.
- If ever I want to get frustrated with a student for their invisible disability, I picture them with a walker. As a speaker told Lori and I the other day...you would never take away a walker from a disabled student. Don't take away the supports or temperament a student with invisible disabilities would need.
- When thinking about discipline, think consequences and not punishment. Consequences require us to slow down and think about how to best teach what we want to see from the student in the future. Punishments are reactive and we lose out on the opportunity to teach.
I'd love to know your thoughts as we travel down this road! Stop by and chat or send me an email as you learn alongside of me!
