A safe return to school
A message from Superintendent Dr. Gustavo Balderas
Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022
Dear Edmonds School District families,
Happy New Year! We hope students, staff and families are having a safe and restful Winter Break. With the evolving situation regarding the COVID-19 Omicron variant, as well as the winter weather we’ve been experiencing, we want to provide you with information to help you prepare for a safe return to school on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022.
Returning to in-person learning Monday, Jan. 3
The Edmonds School District will return to in-person learning as scheduled on Monday. As we have throughout the pandemic, we will continue to follow guidance provided by the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) and the Snohomish Health District to make decisions that support the health and safety of our students, families and staff.
It will take all of us working together to ensure a safe and healthy return from Winter Break
Here are a few ways we can all help support the health and safety of students and staff in our schools:
If you are experiencing COVID symptoms, please stay home and get tested and contact your student’s school
Get vaccinated, including a booster shot
Avoid large gatherings
Continue to wash your hands regularly
Wear masks properly
Maintain a social distance from others
How will the district decide whether to change to remote learning?
The decision to transition to remote learning will be based on either the direction of the DOH, Snohomish Health District or the district’s ability to have enough staff given absences due to illness.
To help prepare for the possibility of a quick pivot to remote learning, we ask students to take their district-issued Chromebooks to and from school daily. If we need to close a school or classroom, staff will have one day to prepare and then remote learning will take place until it is safe to return to school. Students will follow their same schedule and teaching will be conducted through Zoom.
What are the latest district requirements for quarantine and isolation timelines for positive or close contacts?
Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) changed the nation’s COVID-19 isolation and quarantine timelines, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) and OSPI have not updated their guidance for K-12 schools as of this time. As a result, all quarantine and isolation timelines that were in effect for students and staff will remain the same until further notice. You can find details on our COVID-19 Health and Safety webpage: bit.ly/ESDCOVIDsafety.
On-site testing at schools resumes Monday, Jan. 3; Please visit the Snohomish Health District’s website for testing locations if needed over the weekend
We have PCR testing available for students and staff experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or identified as close contacts, and results are available within 24 hours. Testing will resume at all our schools on Monday, Jan. 3. Please contact your school office or our COVID-19 Response Team at 425-431-1900 to schedule an appointment. At this time, we are not able to provide testing for family members. Please check the Snohomish Health District website for locations for family members.
