Sonia Maria Sotomayor
Sonia Maria Sotomayor (born June 25, 1954) is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. She was nominated by President Barack Obama on May 26, 2009 and has served since August 8, 2009. Sotomayor is the first Hispanic and Latina member of the Court.
Sotomayor was born in The Bronx, New York City, to Puerto Rican-born parents. Her father died when she was nine, and she was subsequently raised by her mother. Sotomayor graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1976 and received her Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 1979, where she was an editor at the Yale Law Journal. She worked as an assistant district attorney in New York for four and a half years before entering private practice in 1984. She played an active role on the boards of directors for the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, the State of New York Mortgage Agency, and the New York City Campaign Finance Board.
During her tenure on the Supreme Court, Sotomayor has been identified with concern for the rights of defendants, calls for reform of the criminal justice system, and making impassioned dissents on issues of race, gender and ethnic identity.*

Jorge Ramos
Jorge Ramos (born March 16, 1958) is a Mexican journalist and author. Regarded as the best-known Spanish-language news anchor in the United States of America, he has been referred to as "The Walter Cronkite of Latin America". Based in Miami, Florida, he anchors the Univision news television program Noticiero Univision, the Univision Sunday-morning political news program Al Punto, and the Fusion TV English-language program America with Jorge Ramos. He has covered five wars, and events ranging from the fall of the Berlin Wall to the War in Afghanistan.
Ramos has won eight Emmy Awards and the Maria Moors Cabot Prize for excellence in journalism. He has also been included on Time magazine's list of "The World's Most Influential People". *

Tribe Lunch Tuesday Guest Speaker - September 29th
Dr. Anarosa Estevez is an educator who recently retired after 34 years of service to the public school system and moved on to the University system as a University Supervisor for student teachers at California State University, Northridge.
Dr. Estevez’s experience as an educator has always been influenced by extraordinary teachers who believed and encouraged her throughout her educational career. This includes her elementary teachers, high school teachers, and university professors.
Today, she hopes to give back to the community of learners by mentoring young upcoming teachers.

CVUSD College & Career Information Night - Wednesday, 9/30
You are invited to the annual and first virtual CVUSD College and Career Information Night on September 30, 2020 from 5:00 - 7:20 pm. Students and their families from Century Academy, Conejo Valley High School, Newbury Park High School, Thousand Oaks High School, and Westlake High School will be attending this very popular event.
The event provides an opportunity for our students and parents to learn more about college selection, the application process, career choices and support services. The program will consist of 30-minute presentations by college and university representatives followed by a 10-minute Q&A session, and the schedule is as follows:
- Session 1 - 5:00 - 5:40 pm
- Session 2 - 5:50 - 6:30 pm
- Session 3 - 6:40 - 7:20 pm.

ASG Tribe Lunch Activities
Hello Tribe -
We had so much fun this week with all of our lunchtime activities. Some of our wonderful students led a baking tutorial and we made churro chips, we played games and the cheerleaders taught the Freshmen spirit chants. Thank you to everyone who promoted our WOW week to our Freshmen!
Next week we will have activities for all students. We have a great guest speaker, Dr. Anarosa Estevez (bio below), who will be attending our Tribe Lunch Tuesday. On Thursday, one of our ASG students will lead a zoom art class. If you know of any students who would be interested in attending please have them RSVP below.

WHS College & Career Center Happenings
SAVE THE DATE: The Annual CVUSD College & Career Information Night will be held virtually on Wednesday, September 30th from 4:50-7:20pm. Check www.conejousd.org/CollegeCareerNight for more information.
These sessions will be available for all students in Grades 9-12 during the Student Lunch Period. These
meetings are intended for students-only (no parents because of confidentiality reasons).
Session 1 will be 10:45-11:15am and Session 2 will be 11:20-11:50am.
Naviance Pre-Registration is required to obtain the link for all college presentations. UC Application Workshop hosted by UCSB
WHS is excited to host UCSB Admissions for a UC Application Workshop on October 5th from 6:30-7:45pm. Any seniors applying to the UCs should join for tips on how to enter your academics, fill out the activities and awards section, and craft your PIQs for maximum results. Students and families from all grade levels are welcome to join!

FREE MEALS ARE NOW AVAILABLE FOR ALL CHILDREN AGES 2 – 18 YEARS BEGINNING TODAY (AUGUST 31ST) THROUGH DECEMBER 31ST!
Beginning August 31, 2020, the CVUSD Child Nutrition Department will furnish meals at all District schools (except Westlake High School and Conejo Valley High School), as well as at Las Casitas, at no charge during the hours listed below. Even though we are not distributing meals from the WHS campus, these meals are available for our students and siblings through one of the other school sites. It will not be necessary for students to provide student identification numbers during this time frame. All meals served will be free of charge for all children ages 2 – 18 years of age. Lunch and breakfast (for the next day) will be provided for each child.
Elementary Schools: 11:30 am to 12:30 pm
Middle Schools: 11:30 am to 12:30 pm
High Schools: 10:45 am to 11:45 am
Las Casitas: 11:30 am to 12:30 pm

PTSA Reflections 20-21: I Matter Because..............
Collection Date: October 20, 2020
Discover your world and explore new cultures or your own through dance, film, literature, music, photography or visual arts. Choose the arts category you’re interested in, create an original piece of artwork based on the theme: “I Matter Because…” and be recognized as an artist in your community. No experience is required to participate in Reflections!
Interested Westlake High School students may submit one or more entries virtually or in-person.
Students may interpret this year's theme and enter in one or more of the following categories:
· Dance Choreography (Solo and ensemble works of all dance styles)
· Film Production (Animation, narrative, documentary, experimental or media presentation)
· Literature (Prose, poetry, reflective essay, screen play, etc.)
· Music Composition (All music styles and combinations of instrumentation)
· Photography (traditional, composite, etc.)
· Visual Arts (drawing, ceramics, collage, sketching, sculptures, etc.)
· Special Artist Division (students with disabilities who receive services under IDEA or ADA: Section 504)
Entry Collection:
ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION – It’s advisable for the students to submit their artwork electronically. Please make sure you photograph your entry from several angles. Files should be emailed to ptsareflectionswhs@gmail.com no later than October 20, 2020.

The Reflections Arts Recognition Program is a national arts recognition and achievement program for students. Since 1969, over 10 million students across the nation have taken part in this popular PTA program. The excitement and enthusiasm that the program generates for students, parents, schools and communities is unmatched with the majority of California PTAs participating in the program at all PTA levels.

Hello WHS GATE Families,
Welcome to the 2020-21 school year at Westlake High School! My name is Vanessa West and I will be your new GATE DAC parent representative this year. I am looking forward to collaborating with you, our school, and our district to share activities, educational opportunities, and resources to support and challenge our children.
