Melvyl is Upgrading
The Library's Melvyl catalog will be upgraded from OCLC's WorldCat Local to the WorldCat Discovery interface on Wednesday, May 22. WorldCat Discovery includes device optimization and delivers more relevant search results and presents a better user interface than the current catalog.
Any personal lists created on Melvyl's current WorldCat Local platform will not automatically transition to WorldCat Discovery. Instructions for importing lists from WorldCat Local to WorldCat Discovery are located in this guide. The guide also introduces other new features and how-to instructions.
After the migration date, you can still access, but not import, saved personal lists and searches associated with a WorldCat account at worldcat.org.
Two-Day Data Carpentry Workshop is Back
Data Carpentry aims to help researchers by teaching them computing skills in order to work more effectively with data. Their workshops cover concepts and tools that workshops participants can then apply to their own research and workflows.
This 2-day Data Carpentries workshop is aimed at graduate students and faculty who are interested in learning more about tools like Unix, Git, and R.
For more information, contact Dr. Katie Coburn.

Text Mining & HathiTrust Digital Library Data with the HTRC
The University of California is an institutional member of HathiTrust, a collection of millions of titles digitized from libraries around the world. Much of the content is "book-like" material, so the data may be of high interest to history or CRES researchers. The digital tools provided by the HathiTrust Research Center enable computational analysis of the HathiTrust collection.
The UC Merced librarians attended a webinar on May 9 that provided an overview of some of the tools and examples of research projects that have resulted from using the tools.
Watch the "Analyzing HathiTrust Digital Library with the HTRC" webinar recording to learn about the HTRC tools.
