Classroom families in extreme need - please help!
Thank you so much for the outpouring of support, and donations for our two class families affected by a fire. You have really warmed our hearts with your generosity, and community spirit. Donations of books and toys would still be really appreciated. Let's help these children continue to feel the warmth of their school community, as their homes are rebuilt. There is a 7 year old boy, and his 1 year old brother in one family; and a 5 year old girl and her toddler brother in the other family. Thanks so much in advance!

A Look at Our Week
In our Read Alouds this week we will be honing in on sight words. In order for your children to progress in their reading they need to memorize sight words (words that can't be decoded phonetically) If your child has paper baggy books, have them circle the sight words as they read to you each night.
I am using our Writing Time this week to introduce our new Social Studies topic: Geography and Environmental Literacy. This topic is a passion of mine, and I am excited to introduce them to the world of maps, globes and landforms!
In Science this Quarter we will be learning about the weather. This week we will kick off our research by recording the weather each day (one of our Leader jobs is the Meteorologist!), and reading books about thunderstorms, and rain.
Our class has set themselves the goal of using their "gentle hands" each day. We will be recording all of our successes at using our words to settle disputes, and keeping control of our bodies during the next 30 school days. I was so proud of the students for choosing to develop their physical self-control, and I look forward to watching the classroom dynamic alter this month. We will continue to learn about the 7 Habits this week, as we read a story about "Being Proactive" (habit 1) Being proactive essentially means that we're in charge of ourselves. We will be thinking about how we are in control of our boredom especially. If your child dares to tell you that they're bored over the next few weeks, remind them that they can be proactive and think of something that they like to do during free time. This has worked wonders in my household - now I, as a parent, don't feel that it's my job to entertain my boys: They have interests, and talents, and they're in charge of filling their own time. It's freeing to hand back that responsibility to your children!
Another aspect that we will be talking about this week, is being proactive about being in charge of our things e.g. coats, folders, baggy books, library books. Hopefully as the weeks go by, you will notice a new sense of responsibility in your child for looking after their things. It is important for them to bring their folders each day so that we can maintain good communication between home and school.
