Can You Hear Me Now?
A few years ago an editorial cartoon in the Kalamazoo Gazette pictured a boy and his father in a row boat out in the middle of a lake. The boy was throwing the dad’s cell phone into the water, and already in the water could be seen a laptop and another cell phone. The boy was asking his father, “Can you hear me now?” My first impression upon viewing this cartoon was to laugh and comment to my family, “Well, isn’t that the truth?” Then I cut the cartoon out of the paper and put it on my refrigerator as a reminder. As parents we are so busy trying to take care of our jobs, our home, our family, and all the details in between. We try to figure out ways to multi-task and become more efficient. The technology of our times is supposed to help us be more accessible and more connected to the people in our world. BUT… IS IT? Think about the past week. How much time did you devote to just listening to your children? With no interruptions? Do you let your cell phone interrupt conversations you are having as a family? Do you answer a text while you are talking to your child about their school day? Do you put the needs of your job ahead of your family, bringing work home that should be left at your workplace? Our children grow so quickly, and the “simple moments” that happen each day are gone before we can blink a few times! Sometimes we all just need a “wake-up call.” Often when tragedy strikes, we hear people comment about understanding what is really important in life. Let’s not wait for a tragedy. Let’s make time for listening to the people who are important in our life. Children can sense when you really aren’t listening, or you are “listening” to too many things at once. Give your full attention to your children by turning to face them, making eye contact, and listening with your heart and your head. Try it for a week and notice what is different about your children, but also ask them to tell you what is different about you. You may be surprised by their answer.
