Attendance By Grade-Level
Research shows a direct relationship between school attendance, academic achievement and success in school. The state’s Missouri School Improvement Plan (MSIP5) expectation for public school attendance is 90% or above.
We are striving to ensure that at least 90% of students are here at least 90% of the time. At the end of 3rd quarter, we will share another update about the percentage of students who have met that goal by grade-level, but until then we will share the average attendance by grade-level each week.
See below for the average attendance by grade-level from February 21st-February 28th.
Kindergarten: 93.16%
1st Grade: 94.12%
2nd Grade: 93.19%
3rd Grade: 93.21%
4th Grade: 93.20%
5th Grade: 94.29%

A Message from Principal Deayon...
Greetings Southeast Families,
I wanted to take a moment to share some exciting news with you. Effective next school year, the entire Park Hill School District will implement the initiative of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). This researched-based approach is a multi-tiered system that helps schools meet the needs of all learners.
Additionally, we will be joining the majority of other Park Hill schools (primary and secondary) in becoming an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school. This program helps schools work to close the opportunity gap and ensure that all students are graduating college, career, and life ready.
We are looking forward to the natural alignment between PBIS and AVID. This will also allow Southeast to join other Park Hill Schools in the learning and implementation associated with these new initiatives. After collaborating with our amazing teachers and staff, a survey was administered. Through that, it was determined that we will not continue with the Leader In Me program during the 2020-2021 school year. This will allow our staff to unite according to our common vision and mission to better meet the needs of our students.
We are delighted to say that as we move forward, many things that began during our six years as a Leader In Me School have now become standard operating procedure and will continue:
Interest Based Clubs
Student-led assemblies
Student-led conferences
Leadership roles (school-wide and classroom)
Goal-setting (school, class, teacher, student)
Leadership notebooks
Mission statements (district, school, teacher, classroom, student)
Common language that is taught to students (direct lessons, integrated approaches, modeling)
Student leadership group (e.g., Student Lighthouse)
We are so grateful for your continued partnership and support. We believe you will be pleased to see how these new initiatives complement our existing Southeast values.

Shape Your Future In Park Hill
You'll soon have the opportunity to make sure you're counted in the 2020 Census! As the U.S. Constitution requires every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau will count every person living in our country. Starting in mid-March, every home will receive a questionnaire, which asks about the people living in the home, including their names and demographic information, such as age, sex and race. You can respond online, on the phone or through the mail.
It is important for all of us to take 10 minutes to participate, because the results impact everyone in our schools. The data determines how the government spends more than $675 billion across the nation, including funding for school lunches, services and support for low-income families, education grants, community classes and more. In addition, the census determines how we are represented on the state and federal levels.
The 2020 census records will be confidential until 2092.

Kindergarten Enrollment and Roundup
Starting April 1, families with children starting kindergarten in Park Hill in August 2020 can enroll their children in their assigned schools! Children who turn five on or before July 31 are eligible for kindergarten for the 2020-2021 school year. After you enroll, mark your calendar for our Kindergarten Roundup event on May 4 from 5:30-7 p.m. For more information, please visit https://www.parkhill.k12.mo.us/parent_resources/enroll_in_park_hill.
Habits At Home: Habit 5: Seek First to Understand Then to be Understood
Seek First to Understand then to be Understood means that it is better to listen first and talk second. By taking the time to listen to another person, you reach a higher level of communication. This habit is best approached by introducing listening as a skill that should be practiced. Learning to listen without interrupting and learning to listen with your ears, your eyes, and your heart will help children build a foundation for Habit 5. Simply put, we have two ears and one mouth so that we can spend more time listening with the intent to understand.
- To better understand how listening can help or hurt a relationship, try “pretend listening” with your child for a few minutes. Your child will be frustrated. Explain what you were doing and discuss how your child felt. Now have your child ignore you when you are talking. Discuss how it makes you feel when you are ignored. Finish the discussion by thinking of ways to let the other person know when you feel you are not being truly listened to. Remind your child that this is also an example of Think Win-Win.
- Body language can be even more important than words. Play a game with your kids where you each try to guess the other’s emotion (happy, sad, angry, frustrated, bored, etc.) without using any words, just body language.
- Demonstrate how saying the same phrase in a different tone of voice can give the phrase a completely different meaning. Try emphasizing different words in the phrase “I didn’t say you did it” and then have your child tell you how the meaning changed.

Do You Know A Park Hill Star?
The Park Hill Star recognition program was started in 2015 to celebrate support staff and teachers whose work is especially noteworthy.
The following is an overview of the Park Hill Star Program:
Our employees are the reason we are so successful here in the Park Hill School District, and we would like to recognize them for all they do for our students.
That is why we present the Park Hill Star award once a month to a pre-K or elementary teacher, a secondary teacher and a support employee.
Southeast Communication
You will find several ways to stay up to date on school activities throughout the year on the Southeast website , Facebook, Twitter and newsletters from your child’s teacher. You will also occasionally get an automated email or voicemail message sent to you by the school with important information and reminders. We know two-way communication is best, so please feel free to call, email, or stop by the school with any questions you may have regarding your child’s education.
