Nurse Notes – Health Helps and Tips
From time to time a case of head lice is reported to the school throughout the year. Should a case of head lice be brought to the school’s attention, the school nurse will maintain confidentiality of the student’s identity and assist the staff and parents with educational material. While the odds of your son or daughter developing a case of head lice are relatively small, the following includes useful information on head lice and the signs and symptoms.
Head Lice Information
* Head Lice are small parasitic insects that can be found on the heads of people.
* Head lice feed on human blood several times a day and live close to the human scalp.
* Head lice and head lice nits are found on the scalp, around and behind the ears and near the neckline at the back of the head.
* Head lice cannot fly or jump; they can only crawl
* Head lice are spread by direct head‐to‐head contact
* Head lice are rarely spread by contact with clothing or personal items (such as combs,
brushes, hats or coats)
* Head lice are not a sign of uncleanliness
* Head lice are not known to spread disease.
Signs and symptoms of head lice infestation
* Tickling feeling of something moving in the hair
* Itching, caused by an allergic reaction to the bites of the head louse
* Irritability and difficulty sleeping; head lice are most active in the dark
* Sores on the head caused by scratching
If your child exhibits signs and symptoms of head lice infestation, you should examine your child’s head (especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck) for crawling lice and nits. If crawling lice and/or nits have been found, all household members should be examined for head lice and/or nits every 3‐4 days. Persons with live (crawling) lice or nits within ¼ inch or less of the scalp should be treated. We also encourage that you talk with your child’s physician for the best treatment plan.
For more information on head lice and treatment go to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) web site at http://www.cdc.gov
Clinic Clothes –
Accidents happen during the day ranging from landing in a mud puddle, spilling milk at lunch or not making it to the rest room quick enough. Please – regardless of the grade level, pack your student an extra set of clothes in their backpack for those oopsie’s that occur during the day. The nurse's clinic has a very limited supply of clothes and sizes. My many thanks to those who have borrowed clothes and promptly returned them laundered!

Attendance Line Voicemail
If your child will be absent from school, please call the HPE Attendance Line by 9:00 a.m. at 915-4210. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, you may call the attendance line's voicemail anytime and leave a message. If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at leas one week prior to the absence.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.
Sign In Procedures
As a reminder, the sign in procedure at Harrison Parkway includes signing your child in or out using a computer. If you are signing your child out of school, please have your driver's license with you, as you will need it to complete the sign-out process.
Arrival & Dismissal Procedures
Students are to be dropped off and picked up at the front of the drive by the school's front doors. Please have your child exit from the passenger side of all vehicles. Students should stay in their seatbelts/safety seats until your vehicle has come to a complete stop and your child is ready to get out of the car. Please only dismiss and receive your child at the front of the school. Do not release students from the back of the line so they mush walk past other cars releasing children. It is imperative that cars remain in a single line along the curb. Please do not attempt to pass cars releasing students as this creates an unsafe situation for our children. Please use extreme caution in our parking lot and drive in the morning and afternoon, as both are high-traffic times. Thank you for your part in keeping our children safe.

State Park Passes Now Available for Loan from the Library
With temperatures finally on the rise, thoughts are turning to the great outdoors and exploring all that Indiana has to offer. In honor of the state’s bicentennial, the Indiana State Library has now provided each library with a state park pass for loan to library cardholders.

Due to high demand, the passes will be available on a first come, first served basis, with no holds or renewals available. Passes can be checked out for up to 7 days.
Like other library materials, if passes are returned after the due date, late fees will apply. If passes are lost, a full replacement cost will be assessed. For further information, check out the library’s website at www.hepl.lib.in.us.
