Parent/Teacher Communication Wednesday October 13, 3:20-8:00 pm Thursday October 14, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

Building a Strong Parent-Teacher Partnership

What makes the difference in how your child performs in school? The answer might surprise you. It’s not your child’s IQ, the teacher, the school, or your educational level. Although all of these play a part, study after study tells the same story. Children who do best in school have parents who are actively involved in their child’s education. One of the best ways to get involved is continue building a strong parent-teacher partnership.

I ask that you come prepared to your communication conference with questions and information that will help both you and the teacher strengthen the team effort you share educating your child.

We look forward to seeing all of you during conferences!

Thank you,

Mr. Jagels

Picture Retake Day - October 20

Did your smile look crooked? Did your eyes shut down? Did your hair stand up? Was the camera flash too bright? Did you forget your picture money? Did you happen to be absent on the first picture day? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may have your school pictures retaken on Wednesday, October 20th. Please stop by the front office if you'd like an order form. You may also order online through Martin Photography's website.

September High 5 Drawing

Congratulations to Kevin N. (2nd Grade Mrs. Bruning) and Amer C. (3rd Grade Mrs. Rodwell) for being selected as the September High 5 Drawing winners! They were able to pick three of their friends and work on their golf shot with our resident golfing pro and 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Schmitz. As a bonus, they were also treated to some lessons on our 3 Be's from some of our high school golf team students. Thank you Mrs. Schmitz and the WHS golf team for taking the time to reinforce positive behavior with our students!

Halloween Parade and Parties

Oakdale Elementary will continue with its tradition of our Halloween Parade and Party on Friday, October 29th with a few modifications. The parade this year will occur after the parties. Additionally, due to safety protocols, we are only allowing Room Parents to enter the building to hold the parties. If you are not signed up to be one of the two room parents in a classroom, you will not be able to enter the building. We apologize for this inconvenience, but want to ensure the safety of all our students and staff.

Halloween Party and Parade

  • 2:30-3:15 pm - Classroom Parties (room parents only)
  • 3:15 pm - Outdoor Parade around the playground (all invited)

Parade

The parade will begin at 3:15 p.m. and start near the cafeteria doors. The students will walk around the outdoor classroom sidewalk and then re-enter the building through the preschool doors. We ask that you not take your child from the parade for dismissal in order to ensure the safety of all students. After students come back inside, we will proceed with our regular school dismissal. At the parade, please return to your cars so traffic can flow smoothly. The back parking lot (basketball hoops) will be open and the church has graciously agreed to allow parking at that time as well.

Costumes

Please remember we ask that costumes be on the fun and friendly side, free of scary or frightening masks or clothing with blood, gore, or weapons. Please reserve make-up for evening activities. If students bring a costume that includes any of these items, they will be asked to remove them or change. Students should bring their costumes at the beginning of the school day and should be able to get dressed in their costume without assistance. Thank you for honoring these requests.

Veterans Day Celebration

Please join us in honoring our Oakdale Community Veterans this Veterans Day with a reverse Veterans Day Parade on Thursday, November 11th from 10:30-10:50 a.m! Please invite your family members, neighbors, and friends who are past and current service men and women of all branches of our Armed Services to join us on this special day. Our students and staff will be lining the Oakdale drop off and pick up lane to welcome our honorees as they drive through our cue.

On this day all members of the Oakdale Community of Learners will be wearing red, white, and blue. Please talk with your Tiger about the veterans who may be in your family or circle of friends to invite them to our special event!

If you cannot make the event, we will again be recording the parade and sending a YouTube link later that same day to share with family, friends, and relatives.

This year, our students would like to recognize our Veterans with a hand-written card. If you have, or know of, a Veteran, please click the link below to provide mailing information so we can honor our Veterans and thank them for their service.

Thank You Veterans Day Link

* In case of inclement weather, we will send a school messenger email and text message by 9:00 am to alert families that the event will be cancelled.

Recess

As the temperatures begin to cool down, please ensure your student is dressed appropriately for the weather. Recess will be held outdoors, except when the equipment is excessively slick or rains are heavy, we will typically go out for recess, even when there may be a bit of mist or sprinkling of rain. We want all students to stay warm, healthy, and get plenty of fresh air and exercise. Students will not have outdoor recess when either the air temperature or wind chill factor is 10 degrees fahrenheit or lower.

Attendance at WHS Football Games

Westside families -

We are encountering problems at our Varsity Football Games at Westside High School involving our students. Specifically, we have noticed an increasing number of elementary and/or middle school students unaccompanied and/or unsupervised during and after games.

This last week, our staff and security noted a group of younger students together in our parking lot more than 30 minutes after the stands had emptied; needless to say, it was concerning to see a group of 10-13 year olds, alone, at 10pm on a Friday night.

This is creating safety concerns, as well as crowd control and behavioral issues for our security, staff members, and other students and families. While we encourage our younger students to attend games, whether football, softball, basketball, etc., we remind you they must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. In addition, we remind all students they are expected to sit/stay in the stands to watch the game and not congregate near concession stands and restrooms.

Thank you for your support in helping Westside High to be a welcoming and safe place for all of our fans, student athletes and visitors.
