JUNIOR NEWS
Juniors will take the state mandated ACT on March 21st
Our state has provided an opportunity for all 11th graders to take the ACT free of charge.
What is the ACT?
The Act is an achievement test that determines a student's current level of knowledge. Students are tested on a variety of subjects, including Mathematics, Science, and English. The test is designed to gauge a student's understanding of these topics, and their ability to apply their knowledge and reasoning skills to a standardized set of questions.
What does my ACT score mean?
The highest achievable score on the ACT is 36. A students score is determined by awarding points for all questions answered correctly. No points are deducted for wrong answers. Each section of the ACT is graded separately, and these scores are averaged to create a composite score for the entire exam. A student's final score provides college admissions boards with an accurate measure of a student's skills in the various areas that have been tested.
How does the ACT benefit a student?
The ACT can benefit students in several ways. First and foremost, a good score will gives a student a greater chance of being accepted to the college of his/her choice. A student's final ACT score also gives him/her a good idea of their academic standing, which can be extremely helpful when planning an educational path. A student's ACT score will highlight areas in which the student may need to improve, and allow the student to plan accordingly by enrolling in any necessary review courses. FHS offers free ACT tutoring and free ACT test prep.
For more information on the ACT visit by clicking HERE for the Go College Website or HERE for the ACT website.

Career Exploration Day
Dr. McCoy and the Soaring Heights teachers had the students complete a Career Interests Assessment. Students discovered their individual interest in possible career choices. Dr. McCoy and Mrs. Dodson invited community members working in various industries and professions to speak with students about their work. This allowed the students to have better understanding of their career interest. It was a wonderful experience for the students and FHS was very appreciative of the time and effort of our guest, the Soaring Heights teachers, Mrs. Dodson and Dr. McCoy for providing this opportunity to our students!

Student Attendance - A Parent's Role
One of the most important things your child can do to achieve academic success is also one of the most basic: going to school every day. In fact, research has shown that your child's attendance record may be the biggest factor influencing her academic success.
- Help your child get to school on time every day. Babysitting, problems with a car, and the weather are not permissible reasons to miss school. Frequently coming to school late will make it difficult for your child to stay caught up. Teach your child how to set and use an alarm clock.
- Take an active role. Stay involved with your child's daily experiences at school by asking how the school day went, and then listening carefully to what your child shares with you — both the successes and struggles. Make it a point to meet your child's teacher and friends.
- Keep updated on school events and announcements.
- Try to limit the amount of time that your child misses school due to medical appointments or illness. If possible, avoid scheduling doctor's appointments during the school day. Allow your child to stay home only in the case of contagious or severe illnesses.
- Schedule family events with your child's school schedule in mind. Plan holiday celebrations or family trips during weekends or school vacations.
- Make school a priority. By making your child's school attendance a priority, you will be taking an important step in supporting your child's school success, and setting a good example.
Importance Attendance Reminders
- Students are assigned to one Saturday School or to four days of Tardy Boost Time (Students must report to Tardy Boost Time instead of deciding how they want to use their time) for 5 tardies to any class. (Each assignment is an equivalent of four hours.)
It is your responsibility to get a pre-arranged absence form for taking your permit or license test. The receipts from the DMV are NOT an excuse no matter what the DMV tells you.
Students late for school must "check-in" in the attendance office.
Students called to "check-out" must sign out in the attendance office.
Parents must call and talk to Ms. Jay if student is not returning from dual or off campus periods. (Not doing so will cause period absences in which students will be written up for skipping.)
Pre-Approved absences are coded as parent notes.
Parents may write 5 notes per semester in order to have absences coded as excused as long as the note meets the criteria of an excused absence.

Parking Passes for 2016-17
All students parking on the FHS campus must buy a parking pass. It is very important for all students to have a parking pass and to park in their assigned spaces. Students without parking passes or parking in other students' parking spaces may have their vehicles towed at any time. Students can buy parking passes in bookkeeping during Boost. Students must complete the parking permit form, have a valid driver's license, have proof of insurance and have all past fees paid. The cost of the parking pass is $15.00.
