Principal's Message
This morning we had an all school assembly to end our first week. It was a joy to have students and staff together to celebrate the beginning of a great year. I introduced all of our staff to the students as we have several new faces on campus these days. I also spoke to students about being responsible, respectful, safe and kind. In our first 20 days of school, staff will especially focus on helping students know what this looks like in the classroom and on all parts of campus so our campus is safe and inviting for all students. In addition, our characteristic of the month is Responsibility. We will continue to discuss what being responsible means here at school and at home. Feel free to discuss what being responsible looks like for your family at home.
You may have heard that we've changed our lunch/recess model this year for our 1st-6th grade students. Students still have 45 minutes for lunch/recess as in years past, but instead of eating first, playing after we've switched things up and we're now playing first, eating after. I will talk more about the many benefits to this change next week at Back to School Night. We know with any change like this to our schedule, it takes a little time to get used to a new way. During this transition, I have a couple tips for parents!
*Students are eating about 20 min later than before and are hungry come lunch time. Packing a heavier snack at snack recess may be helpful to get students through until lunch time.
*Students are drinking more water at lunch time because they've just come from recess. It may be helpful to make sure they have a full water bottle or drink in their lunch.
Our teaching staff and yard duty staff have already seen great benefits to this lunch model in just a week. Change takes time to get used to, but I'm excited to see the health and learning benefits of our new model this year!
Next Thursday evening is Back to School Night! This will be a great time to see your child's classroom, hear from the teacher about what your child will be learning this year and find out about ways you can get involved in the classroom and our school. Please make sure you mark your calendars for August 23rd! See below for more details.
Lastly, I just want to say that I believe this is going to be a great year and I'm grateful to be the principal at Sequoia Elementary. Thank you for your hard work this week getting students back into a school routine. We know these first few days and weeks can be challenging but they've done a great job transitioning back to school and we are excited for all that this year holds for your child. Please know that I am always available to touch base by email, phone or a stop by the office. I look forward to working together this year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Clark
