Exploring negative space
Updates
It has been a busy few months and I am so happy to be sending another newsletter out to all of you with information about the Dance concert. The next edition will highlight some projects students have been working on leading up to our concert.
We are happy to welcome Ms. Ruffin as she is officially in her student teaching semester. She has begun teaching the Choreography elective class and a few technique classes for 11th and 12th grade.
I am excited to share that we will have a NEW logo for the CSA Dance Department which will be unveiled at the Dance Concert on Thursday. It was designed by junior visual art Major, Violet, and has been a work in progress as she's been studying dancer's movements and lines.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
All students are required to follow dress code policies including securing hair off of the face and neck. If a ponytail/hair secured from the face extends beyond the neck to the shoulders, it needs to be in a bun.
Nails should be a reasonable length and shape; it is dangerous to dance with long nails. We are moving into more moments of partnering and weight share, which adds an added layer of importance to this reminder. Industry standard is short, or no length of nails, no polish on stage.
We have a revolving door of guests, a documentary being filmed, and an expectation of all students to hold themselves to the highest standard at all time with or without guests in the space.
Dance Concert
The Dance Concert is January 26, 2023 at 6:30pm
Doors will open at 6pm and I am hopeful we will have space to accommodate all families who plan to attend. The concert will run about 1 hour and we do need to be out of the building no later than 8:pm following the performance.
Students will be in technical rehearsals and dress rehearsals Monday through Thursday leading up to our family/community performance. They are expected to get all makeup work for class time missed and will be given time to do homework and see teachers for work.
What Should My Dancer Bring to School on Performance Week?
Water bottle
Snacks (fruit, non-crumb snacks, non-staining foods)
Warm socks for the theatre
Slides for walking from the studios to the theatre
A warm sweater
Makeup
Hair supplies
Skin tone ballet tights
Skin tone ballet shoes
A black leotard
Proper undergarments
Deodorant
Headphones
A positive attitude
How Can I Support My Dancer on Concert Week?
Encourage sleep at night
Encourage drinking plenty of water
Carbohydrates (pasta!) are great for fueling dancers for a long day in the theatre
Shift to reflecting on the positive if your dancer is stuck on a tough moment from a run
Encourage performance visualization in down time. Here's a video on the benefits of visualization and imagery in athletics (also applicable to Dance). This article from Dance Spirit Magazine can help, too.
What Will My Dancer Eat This Week?
Monday - Lunch at school at their regular lunch time
Tuesday - Bag lunches at the school
Wednesday - Lunch at school during 5th period
Thursday - Lunch at school during 4th period
Thursday dancers are not permitted to leave the building between the end of the school day and the start of the family/community concert. We will have a pot luck dinner. There is a sign up form posted in each class Schoology page. Students need to continue to follow school policies during performance week including not ordering food deliveries during or after school.
