Digital Newsletter for Chehalem Elementary School
December 2016
Dear Chehalem Families,
December is a festive time at Chehalem with children learning about different holiday traditions from all over the world and looking forward to time with friends and families.
Speaking of time with family, we are very excited about our annual OMSI family night this coming Monday, December 5th. It is free to all family members and free bus service is provided from several pick up locations for adults and children in kindergarten and older (sorry, no pre-school age students allowed on the bus, but are welcome at OMSI). Please see our website for locations of bus pick up or driving directions. 6:00 is the start time and we have the whole museum to ourselves! Hope you will be able to join us.
First trimester report cards will be coming home on Monday as well. You will see marks indicating how well your child is doing on grade level learning targets, as well as behavioral learning marks. If you have any questions about the marks your child receives, please contact the teacher directly.
Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday season filled with joy and relaxation.
Sincerely,
Angee Silliman
Principal, Chehalem

BSD Unveils new My Stop™ app to Track Your Child's School Bus
We know that you are busy and want to make the most of your time. Wouldn't it be great to know when the bus will get to your child's stop each morning? The Beaverton School District's Transportation Department has partnered with Versatrans® to bring you the My Stop™ bus information app.
Available for both iOS and Android, My Stop™ gives you the ability to know exactly where your child's bus is on the route. The app pinpoints the bus's location on a map, as well as provides the estimated time of arrival to a specific student's bus stop. The app uses the District's GPS system. The location is updated every five seconds and the estimated time of arrival is recalculated due to traffic delays. The app will come in especially handy during inclement weather.
The District has been testing the app for several weeks and it is now available for free for parents/guardians and students.
My Stop™ requires very little setup, especially for parents and guardians. Usernames are tied to specific students. All a parent needs to do is log in using the student's ID # as the username and the student's birthdate as the password.
If you have questions about the new app, please see the FAQ on the Beaverton School District's Transportation webpage.
Early Release/Teacher Collaboration
The Beaverton School District and the Beaverton Education Association (BEA) ratified a new contract for 2016-2019. The agreement provides students with more full weeks of school and improves overall continuity for learning. Another important element of the agreement is providing teacher collaboration and professional development time to address gaps in student achievement and improve teacher practice. Beginning in the 2017-2018 school year, the District will implement a 90-minute early release on Wednesday afternoons to allow teachers time to collaborate and participate in professional development opportunities.
Over the course of the next three years, nine additional student contact days will be added to the District calendar.
- 2016-2017: Add 2 student contact days
- 2017-2018: Convert 4 staff development days to student contact days
- 2018-2019: Add 3 student contact days
The differences you will notice in the revised 2016-2017 District calendar include:
- No school on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 (the day before Thanksgiving)
- Friday, February 3, 2017 is a Semester grading/Trimester staff development day - no students
- Seniors last day will be Wednesday, June 7, 2017
- The last day of school for all students will be Wednesday, June 21, 2017
Please refer to the Early Release/Teacher Collaboration link under the Parents & Students tab on the Beaverton School District website.
